Post ELVIRA

I see you're in New York, was she a nationwide thing ? .

Her name is Cassandra Peterson, I remember watching her on TV talking the details behind the scenes of those horrible b grade movies .

I think I caught it in reruns as part of 'Up all night' or 'Night Flight' on USA network. Something basic cable and after midnight.

Wow heavy cracking on the black dash. The car must be from the sunbelt. Cars from the rust belt have rusted metal but good dashes. Cars from the sunbelt have cracked dashes but no rust.

Basically just learn to compare them. The more use the less bumpy the surface. They simply wear down with use. There may be other factors such as uv exposure and regional climate.

Condition of the drivers seat has always been a big one for me. They are perhaps the toughest vinyl seat material ever used in cars. Outlasting leather easily I think. Still eventually they show wear.

A low milage car just has a certain aura about it that is also hard to define. There is a reasonable amount of judgement when estimating the true probable milage. As a general rule never go by the odometers on these cars.

I went into town yesterday to pay the property taxes on our properties. Strange but the main street was closed and there was an air cooled volkswagon event underway. Even stranger in that it was in the middle of the week. Of course I killed an hour or so looking over the cars and talking to the owners. Never saw one younger owner present. Some middle aged but most where owners of my generation. Being over the hill and around the bend.

Surprisingly I estimated that just under half the cars where survivors still in reasonably good condition. I cannot define it accurately but a restored example is usually never quite the same. For example modern base clear coat finishes are far more glitzy for an attempt at a definition. In comparison to the original paint jobs.

It's a nice W123 but still a W123 sedan. Won't see over 6k unless wagon or euro. It's not rare. Check out cali craigslist, they are listed all day for under 7k and nicer condition. We're not talking about a 1950's SL here. It's not a W124 AMG E500. It's a W123.

I love W123's but at the end of the day, it's a om617 diesel sedan.

I question the authenticity of the 50k because I see there’s a lot of replacement/non-original parts that a car with way over 100,000 miles would have, not one with 50K….
I see a replacement Coolant recovery bottle, Radiator, Alda Cap removed, Replacement A/C hoses, aftermarket Oil pan, updated replacement trans cooler lines, aftermarket Tie Rods, Upper control Arms, and aftermarket Rear Axles.

Combined that with the worn steering wheel, worn turn signal stalk, cracked dash, crack wood, faded gauges, looks like a worn brake pedal rubber, worn accessory buttons and a replacement windshield, I believe this car has way over 100K. Could be 150,000 miles or even perhaps 250,000 miles.

I hope I am not too harsh. But Von did solicit an opinion from the members.

I dunno. I think this car could fetch in the 8-9 range on BAT. I’ve watched a lot of auctions there.

Since it's a sedan, I'd say it's a $9-10k car. If it was a CD or TD it would possibly be $12-15k, imo.

It oooks to me like it may be a repaint. It is missing some stickers underhood, and certain parts look somewhat worn. Not trying to accuse, just giving honest feedback since others may ask or think similarly.

The coloration of the diff cover and oil pan were questionable, but also are easy to remove and refinish if one is so inclined, and if low mileage, may have original paint to shine up.

I don't know that hose replacements in a nearly 40 year old car are a sign of anything. My 81 240d has 73k miles and I'm replacing oil and trans cooler hoses as preventive maintenance.

Post Steering Wheel Wear

Someone asked how to tell ? .

Easy - peasy : start the car and turn the steering wheel 1/2 turn or 180 degrees, look at the surface that's now on top ~ deep graining and shiny, no tiny myriad cracks like dry mud .

Lucky to own a low mileage 300cd at one time, the steering wheel has a texture on it that wears over time .THis gold 300d is a very nice example ,most collectors go for low mileage with good papers ,restored cars can hide poor workmanship or worn parts .
