1986 300SDL TURBO CHARGER rebuild question...

Well....long story short.... I found another engine for my 300SDL.
My wishes are before I put it in I would like to attempt to rebuild the turbo while its out.
HOWEVER... I can't get a straight answer just what kind of turbo it is.
I have read elsewhere " its a T30 " but every time I look up that turbo I only find parts for a Nissan. Plus isn't the T designation stand for Garrett turbos?
Mine is a KKK brand. MB # 0020969899

Ugg, just found out there are 3 turbo possibilities for this car, 2 KKK and 1 Garrett.
Now just what KKK turbo I have and can a kit be found?

If yours is a KKK, then it is NOT a Garrett T3. The Garrett was used on some and the KKK on others, there doesn't seem to be any real performance difference between the two. Mine's got the Garrett, parts can be somewhat hard to find for the KKK.

Someplace in the Repair Links there is a couple of suppliers that sell Turbo Parts. However, the threads are over 5 years old.

The KKK used on the 603 was the K24. Not sure if it's the standard K24, or if it has a Mercedes-specific design.

Just swap in a T3. They were used on tons of cars and rebuild kits are dime a dozen. K24 was a dead end. A few specialty shops still rebuild them.

How did you know whether to buy the regular or small bearing kit?

The fella at the shop asked for the #'s on the turbo tag. I called - did not order on line.

Anyone recommend a good how to video?
I found Kent's video but he spends most of his time just comparing the different types and not much wrenching.

Post K24 Turbo Overhaul

*If* it's anything like the Garret T3 just have someone here copy and mail you the instruction sheet that comes with Kent's kits, it's not terribly complicated, I did it on the tailgate of my old GMC pickup truck and I work slowly and clean/polish every part, check threads , etc. , etc.....

No, I no longer have that sheet, I mangled it and then discarded it, sorry .

Post Turbo Service

You'll need a 12 point socket .

Just buy a good kit that comes with instructions and follow them to the letter .
