W116 SD on EBay?

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F332804691761

Anyone know about this car? Rusty air cleaner seems iffy but mileage makes it seem legit.

W116s are prone to rust, no??

Yeah seems kind of low given the other threads on here mentioning rarity and pricing.

This car is close by me. I take it that it wasn’t a PA car, the air cleaner looks scary but the rest of the car looks nice. People are probably scared about the 224k. But it’s claimed to be in great shape and rust free.

one close by me was on Craigslist for $500.- a couple weeks ago. Lasted a couple days. Had some issues but wasn’t surprised to see it go at that price- it had sat for at least a month at at around 1300.- with no takers, but then needed master cylinder and seller dropped it down. The car looked pretty good and was registered/on the road. I was tempted to get it as a winter beater.

Yea..i saw that car on Ebay also...these older cars, you really need to go see them in person...a year ago I saw a W116 SD on craigslist and everything looked super legit..i was ready to buy it that day...man did it turn out to be a complete opposite of what i thought..and I've been around these cars a long time and still the ad versus the the actual car were night and day.

this one looks pretty nice, especially considering where the price is at right now.

You do know the difference between the W116 and W126 right? Both links you've posted are of W126 cars.

my mistake, sorry. Still, was surprised at how low that second one went for (sold for $861.-). It looked pretty good. Are the W126 cars generally regarded as inferior to the W116? I’m obviously new to this..

W126's are just far more common than the W116, especially in diesel form (W116 diesel was only available for a couple years in small numbers). The W126 300SD's are very common so they don't command much money unless they're in amazing condition.

Looks like the relisted vehicle sold for $3,750.00 which is a pretty good price for that mileage and that rusty air cleaner. The condition of that air cleaner definitely makes me think there is a lot more rust on that body than what is shown / described. If I wasn't so worried about the rust I'd say that is a good price. I have a 1980 300SD with around 180,000 miles and a fairly rust-free body and in decent condition and I've definitely noticed that W116's are not as common as W123 or W126's.

They listed everything as working which if that's true that would be a miracle.
