I have been dealing with this for some time. I will try again and then get frustrated. I have been chasing this issue and have finally narrowed it down to something that makes sense. I have limited knowledge and I feel that I am tapped out. Below is the link to a thread that was started over a year ago with all of the details.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/385312-1999-mercedes-e300-grey-smoke-power-loss-=-breakdown.html

The answers to your questions:
1. The system was overfilled by about 3inches on the dipstick.
2. There was no oil leaking and when taken apart there was oil in the turbo and intake.
3. The spoke was actually dark grey.

If it would be easier to speak directly with me, feel free to call (804) 855-4439. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Ron

See if it rotates and has any resistance. Do a full rotation. Let’s see what happens. It won’t tell you how much compression but you’ll get an idea if it has any.

Jake

Do I need to remove anything in order to do this rotation?

If going from the top you need to remove fan shroud, fan, and fan clutch.

Don't forget to grease the screw and threads on the spring compressor.

You don’t need to remove the fan clutch. The shroud I believe so yes. It’s held in by clips. I think your best bet is to do it from underneath the car. You don’t have to do it overhead the engine. Try doing it underneath sitting on the ground before you take it apart. Been a bit since I rotated a 606. I’ll crawl underneath mine and let you know if I have time tomorrow.

You can't take the shroud out without taking the fan out at the same time too. That isn't terribly hard to do, but you need a special ratchet (like this one: https://www.harborfreight.com/14-in-38-in-drive-long-reach-dual-flex-head-ratchet-67994.html) and a short allen socket you can either get at the dealer for about $8 or find on Amazon.

Just take a craftsman and cut it down. I forget my car doesn’t have the ac hooked up so I don’t have aux fans and can take my shroud out without taking the fan blade off. It’s only 3 5mm Allen’s IIRC. Not a big deal.

Slow cranking might just be the battery fading. If the starter turns the engine, I’d check for glow and fuel. Loosen each injector line at the injector then crank. Does fuel leak from each fitting?

606s aren’t known for timing chain issues but cam and IP timing would be on my list to check. Does the 606 turbo IP have an RIV port?

For the heck of it I’d pull the valve cover to make sure the cams are intact and the lifters move as they should while turning the crank.

He had a brand new battery in it and replaced the starter IIRC and it was still a slow crank. Might be worth checking to make sure there isn’t an electrical issue on either end.

I have changed the battery with a good and fully charged one. I have not replaced the starter. There is only a small amount of fuel when cracking the fuel lines at each injector. There are new glow plugs installed since this happened.

Glow plugs only affect cold starts. Take the starter off and have it bench tested. If it isn’t turning the engine fast enough nothing will work right. I can’t believe the mechanics who worked on this didn’t check that. Don’t forget to rotate the engine as well.

I am planning to rotate the engine tomorrow or Monday. I will have to look into having the started removed and checked? What do you think the last of enough fuel flow is related too?
