Handling a sluggish 1983 W123 240D
Good evening all,
I have a pretty nice W123 that needs some TLC. As with many W123 240D owners, it's slow. I'm going through the issue, but I just noticed the Throttle getting stopped by a bolt? I have attached an image of this bolt, can that be adjusted? |

As is remember that is adjustable. There is a specific gap noted in the FSM and you should have it set at the proper gap.

As tyl604 noted, the factory service manual has a whole section on precise throttle linkage adjustments you can make. I would Google it - will really make a difference. I adjusted all of the linkages on my 240d recently and it felt much better.
You can also start out in low gear for a little extra acceleration, then shift up manually when you hear it wanting to shift. Bottom line, it's a slow car. But fun! |

After some time to troubleshoot the problem, I have come up with the following discovery...I'm still lost, but hopefully you all can help.I picked up a Vacuum Hand tester, and Vacuum pressure test Hg. I've gone through the following steps: Also look here for images: https://imgur.com/a/Tk1G2XX.
- As you can see the Vacuum tester, was used on the Vacuum modulator, which shows good 20-21 Hg - I picked up a Vacuum tester from Habor Freight and went to work on the VCV and other Vacuum lines - Based on the images, I'm seeing an issue with Vacuum off of Port 5 on the Central Plug, even with Bypassing the VCV, I'm only getting about 5-9Hg of vacuum - If I were to plug directly into 4 for example, remove the Central Plug, and place may hand over the back side of the plug I would get 20-21Hg. - I'm hitting a wall as to which piece is the problem, whomever had the car before hand removed a good amount of Linkages from the level with Cam (68 on the image on Imgur) - I'm moving soon, so I cannot remove all vacuum hoses to properly diagnose, but once I move out I'll have time to look into things. The symptoms I'm seeing are, and which I can notice change: - If I were to move the Lever with Cam, to simulate my flooring the Accelerator, the car accelerates faster off the line, and begins in 1st gear - Regardless if I have it floored or not, I typically always go through each gear by 25MPH. And I'm pretty sure, the transmission shifts form 2 to 3 at the same time, or a second after. I wouldn't call it a flare, but it shifts way too soon. Resulting in if I'm at 55MPH the engine is screaming. |
