Has anyone tried the eBay timing chain crimping tools?

I'm going to change the chain on my dad's 300D Turbo as a precaution while we're servicing it (has excellent compression, factory rebuilt engine, but chain indicates it is way out of spec and the injection timing is off) but don't want to spend a ton on the tool.

There's several on eBay that say they're for later Mercedes but as far as I can tell are identical to the tool for earlier engines, and $60 is a bit nicer than $190 for the tool plus correct inserts for a double row chain.

Here's an example of what's one ebay, there's probably 4 or 5 different manufacturers though: https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Mercedes-Benz-W203-Timing-Chains-Riveting-Tool-Set-Single-Row-Double-Row/303076051780?hash=item4690bd8b44:g:8ekAAOSwsn9cDxsH

I know some say the tool isn't necessary, but I'd rather use it than try to properly peen over the pin with a hammer.

Once the chain is done, I'm going to retime the injection pump (found the pump timing light for super cheap) and hopefully that clears up the rough running before we get it back in the car with a 5-speed

Thumbs up Timing Chain Tool

Looks O.K. to me, it's prolly Chinese and so will die after several uses, no problem, right ? .

? Where did you find an IP timing light affordably ? . I'd love to buy or borrow one to set my IP dynamically .

TIA,

There is a story on this forum about a crimping tool that broke. A shattered piece of metal penetrated the eyeball of the user, causing permanent damage to his sight.

I've done this job twice, ball peen hammer and a 10lb sledge as the anvil. Works just fine, makes a far nicer peen than the real (pricey) crimping tool. I'd never take the risk of using that tool. Wear protective eye wear, maybe a full facial mask, if you try it.

I also have used this method at least 30 times never a problem.

I have that tool but haven’t used it yet. Maybe next weekend I’ll have the timing apart

Retail that tool is over $500. Did you actually receive one for that price? Seems unreal.

Yes. Retail from the dealer in Europe is much less.

I bought a chain press off ebay. Didn't remove the link. But when I used the crimp it worked fine.
I've used the Mercedes tool on my old 85 300sd and it worked. The ebay tool was used on the 95 e300. Thought it crimped a little better than the Mercedes tool.
Yeah I noticed the tool was cast so it's a good idea to wear safety glasses and stop cranking when you notice a crimp.
I haven't used the sledgehammer ballpeen hammer method but if one wasn't in a hurry that method should work fine. Just remember to not go overboard. It's only needs a slight crimp.
The takeaway is know when to stop.
