mechanical exhaust noise: manifold leak or exhaust pipe?

1984 300DT. At idle, I can hear a distinct "clink clink clink clink clink". Rev the engine slightly and the noise goes away. Spoke with a shop this morning on the telephone and they feel it is most likely an exhaust manifold leak at the engine. Your thoughts and input are appreciated......
