I don't cut the shroud at all.

undo clips for shroud to radiator,

push shroud back past the fan

undo 4 fan bolts with good quality 10mm spanner

to put back together, same as above in reverse.

you put the shroud on before you connect the fan, then slide it forward and put the clips on

I never had trouble on my 1984 & 85 300D. Real quick to pull the 2 top clips, then pull up and the 2 bottom tabs slide out of their slots. Push the shroud back and remove it with the water pump. But, I recall leaving the shroud on while unbolting the water pump. I switched to larger headed bolts (Ace) so I can use an open-ended wrench (12 mm now, I recall) w/o concern of rounding off the bolt heads.

Problem is the shroud doesn’t come out on some cars. And the space doesn’t fit forearms. I don’t feel that it’s exactly the same on all the w123s I’ve owned...

I haven't worked on a W123, but on a 300SDL or W210 E300D it comes out with no problem if you remove the fan at the same time.

Was just thinking about how much I hated that shroud. Anyone made any progress with this?
At the very least, it'd be nice to be able to remove the thing without pulling the upper rad hose...

wow I don't recall this problem with the non turbo w123 300D.

must be a turbo model design problem.

I’ve hardly driven my 240D. I’ll cut off that shroud section next time I need to do that service.
