I got 42K on the front pads of my 140(300SD) and went ahead and had the rears done also as well as the front rotors...I think the rears could have gone much longer...but I didn't want to make another trip to the shop for brakes anytime soon
The pads that went 42K miles were MB pads Warren 1992 300SD 142K Columbus Ohio |

Paul,
My independant Mercedes mechanic (who also drives one of these W123's) swears by Textar pads so I ordered front and rear sets. Alex

Paul,
If you want to give me a few day's trial, I can let you know what my initial evaluation is of the Textar front pads. I just installed them today (in the rain) but haven't had a chance yet to drive around with them. Alex

Now that I've used the Textar pads for a few days, I can say that I approve. They're better than the last ones I had. I think they have a softer feel but seem to stop the car just as well. Unfortunetely, I don't know what the last ones I had were as I bought them at the dealer so they came in a Mercedes box with Mercedes stamping.

I replaced my pads all around with the Raybestos PG Plus pads. much better stopping and very low dust compared to the horrible pagid pads that were previously on the car.

Ok, allow me to ask....where are you guys buying your brake pads. You should be getting around 50K on front pads, about the same or more for the rears. I've got about 10K miles on my front pads and they are hardly even worn, granted I do a lot of highway driving, but I also do a lot of braking from 55. Even when I was only doing city driving I got 30K out of them, and that was only because my RF caliper was hanging up causing the pads to drag. I buy my pads from performance prdoucts, they seem to last a real long time and they are not that expensive.....
Just a thought! |

A reason brandoncrone could get more miles out of your pads is that nonturbo motors slow down faster (brake horsepower), therefore you dont have to brake as much as us turbo folks. 20k miles for a turbo car is really good. Thats just my perception on things. But since you get 50K miles, where do you get your pads? Do they squeal?
Thanks, Austin

I think I hold the record here. In 1990 I got a '80 300SD with 114,000 miles. It now has 235,000 miles and I have yet to replace the front pads. The last time I looked they appeared to be 1/2 worn out. I replaced the rear pads at 120,000 and of course they are still in the car. None of the calipers were ever touched.
I can't don't know what brand either are. The car gets used mostly for long and cross country trips. Many times on interstates the brakes are not touched for 400 miles. I replaced the front rotors just because I got a parts car that had new (machining marks still visable) rotors. But there was no reason to replace the pads. Actually, I want to see if they will last for 200,000 miles but that will take another 8 years or so. P E H |

They are probably asbestos pads.
Just periodically check them. Thats great that they last that long. They are pretty hard then. Austin
