Om617 Crankshaft wobble

So I've got my '84 all put back together and it runs great. I haven't driven it much, thankfully, as I noticed the crankshaft pulley is wobbling significantly. The 27mm crankshaft bolt was 100% torqued properly and it seems like the crankshaft damper is the part wobbling. What do you all think?

Looks to me like the balancing disc is running true but the vibration damper didn't mount up squarely to the disc.

This is what I was thinking. Although I just took took the damn thing apart and made sure everything was perfectly lined up and then bolted everything back together (took an hour and a half... Still the same issue, I am thinking the crankshaft vibration damper is shot/unbalanced.

Does the pulley exhibit run-out as well, or is it just the damper? I cannot really tell from the video.

Good question. Here is a better video that'll show it:

I guess that basically concludes that the vibration damper is unbalanced. I'll see if I can locate a used one in better condition.

Well as it turns out the vibration damper was the culprit. When I disassembled everything the other day I didn't notice but the damper itself was visibly shot:

Thankfully the harmonic balancer was properly installed and the 27mm bolt was torqued to spec, I double checked as well:

I ended up being able to get the exact same vibration damper off of a friends blown up Euro Om617 today. How lucky is that?

Put the new damper on:

Well that fixed it alright but what a pain to redo all of that three times now.

Hope someone out there can benefit from this post. Take care

At least you knew better than to try to "shim it." That would have been a real exercise in futility.

Exclamation Wobbly Damper

Wow .

Glad to took the time to take it apart and look closely, if it had failed underway you'd be *very* unhappy .

FWIW, those dampers are -not- exactly the same ! one was made in January 1984 and t'other in April 1984..... .

Yeah as much as I greatly appreciate all of the advice here, I really couldn't see myself shimming the damper.

Post Harmonic Dampers

FWIW, I've had very good results from "The Damper Dudes" and "The Damper Dude" ~ two places that take your old harmonic balancer, clean it up, mould new rubber into it and return painted as new for fer less $ than any dealer new ones .

I'd never trust any Chinese made repop damper .
