Someone near Nashville may want to get this SD

82SD at PullAPart in Nashville. https://www.pullapart.com/used-cars/locations/nashville-used-cars/used-car-detail/?VIN=WDBCB20A3DB042263

I stopped by and it is rougher than I want. Paint is fading and there is oil all over the engine and I couldn't start it because the battery was down ant the guy wouldn't let my truck onto the lot to jump it.

That said, they can't sell any whole cars because someone on the lot needs to be state licensed and that person quit last week. I talked to the manager and he said he had been interested but the car wouldn't go over 50 mph and a mechanic said that it probably needs a head gasket.

Some of the oil is attributed to leaking at the connection between the tappet cover and turbo. Much of the oil is probably just a leaking tappet cover gasket. Not going over 50 may only be clogged fuel filters.

I told the guy that it wouldn't pass smog because the EGR was missing. The block off plate looked like what Rich sells/sold. There was a sticker on the back Love Veggie or something similar but there was no indication of a separate fuel system.

Wood trim needs to be replaced and seats repaired. The passenger side quarter panel had some damage but not bad. One of the chrome fender flares was loose and looked dirty but not rusted.

The manager said that it came in over the scale and the PO just wanted it gone. He's supposed to call me when a licensed sales person gets hired but I really don't need another project and will pass.

I'm guessing that it could be bought for $500 or so perhaps less since they won't have many people looking for an old SD and will probably put it on the lot with a thought to be bad engine and unknown trans.

I pointed out why the car wasn't worth much and the amount of work needed to turn it into a daily driver. It may be worth getting depending on your parts stash, time and price.

They probably could sell dealer to dealer then out to a consumer.

Yes, site says 83 not 82. Not enough difference to matter. I trashed it enough that it will be close to scrap value. The easiest thing for them to do is sell it whole since not many are looking for those cars. They don't care about any car. It is simply something to sell.

If I were willing to paint it (I'm not) so that it would look as nice as I want, I'd see it run but not fix anything until I owned it. This car supposedly sat for a long time but I didn't look at the tags to confirm.

Anyway, old fuel with clogged filters would be a reason for it to run bad. Old battery sitting for a long time could explain why the battery was discharged so I couldn't crank it.

Give it a week and go look if you're interested. Just talk to the manager & say that a guy on the forum mentioned it and you'd be interested if the price was right given a bad engine and unknown trans. He'll remember because I gave him my business card and we talked about working in the grocery business a long time ago.

It apparently runs because the manager said he had been interested until the info of needing a head gasket. I'd be surprised if that is an accurate diagnosis. Go look and take $500 with you.
