Having dealt with intermittent starters, and even being stranded by the one in the BMW that required 3-4 smacks with a hammer to engage, I'm firmly in the "I'll pay for the peace of mind" camp when it comes to the starter motor. I'm certainly not old, but I'm old enough that I'm not willing to crawl under the car in a parking lot and futz with a starter motor!
Point taken!

Post Starter Repair

"Disappointing I couldn't repair it."

Until you've replaced the Bendix you haven't really tried .

I was looking at a 1979 240D in the junkyard to - day, it had a clean 'rebuilt' starter but the last time I bought a non BOSCH branded rebuilt starter it had a bad Bendix.... .

I'm not sure that's fair to say...

There's a reasonable threshold to "rebuilding."

Sure, for another $60 I could also replace the bendix. I could also replace the screws in the starter housing, perhaps the housing too. But at that point, if I haven't exceeded it, I'm approaching the cost of a remanufactured bosch in dollars, but certainly not quality of work.

Based on what I knew and what parts I could assemble for what I'd consider a reasonable threshold, I gave it a crack =)

Post Reasonble Rebuilding

Nlt replacing the Bendix is a typical shoddy "spray paint rebuild" short cut .

At the very least the Bendix should be opened up and checked for bad springs likes your likely has .

If you don't want to fool with it further I understand but don't cloud the issue .

I wasn't aiming for a full rebuild... Just basic trouble shooting. And during that time, I seldom found mention of the pinion/bendix as a fail item.
In any event, unless I was willing to buy 50, I could not find a single part (0001519613).

Thanks for the help though Nate.
I now know more about the bosch sr67x than I might ever hope to employ.

Post Starter Bendix'

You're welcome Sherm ;

I try to return a fraction of the incredible help I get here.....

The Bendix is somewhat a life time item yet at the same time it's a wear item too .

Few ever get to see the insides, I did decades ago and I was surprised and appalled to see that the coil springs used to tension the sprag clutch rollers, are in fact rectangular in shape meaning they're bound to break at the corners, just like seat springs do over time.....

In the 1970's a fellow I know was a Harley Davidson Mechanic and he got tired of the Delco-Remy Bendix's sprag clutch failures so he took one apart and machined up clever nylon buttons instead of the rectangular springs, my old Pan Head is still prolly chugging along with that same Bendix we repaired for $5 in 1976.....

Here are new Bendix, wow they're not cheap anymore ! :

Well this is infuriating.

Turns out the issue all along was a bolt that had backed itself out, perhaps years ago.

I’m down at pelican parts swapping starters and was able to compare the new to the old.
When I was “rebuilding” I didn’t notice the missing bolt (solenoid actuating arm) because I’d never even seen a starter. This was a $160 lesson. Maddening.

Man... the sting is real.

On the positive side, the new starter cranks with authority.
It’s surprising how much quicker the engine fires.
