Terrible Power Steering Leak ('83 300D)

Boy is it leaking. Fill it up and after a day or so it needs to be filled up again, leaving big puddles on the ground. It's driveable when there's enough fluid (power steering unit doesnt moan and the steering wheel feels right), but the fluid always leaks out given a day or two.

Havent gotten a chance to give it a real look-over yet, but at a glance, both hoses looked fine (return line is a few years old; pressure line is probably ancient). Front seal on the power steering unit was replaced a couple years ago, but the rear one was not (had trouble finding a kit at the time, ugh).

What might it be?

The leak could be down at the Steering Box. As you said you will have to look.

Is it leaking out of the fill cap??? If yes the filter in the bottom of the reservoir is clogged.

Good luck!!!

If it turns out to be the PS pump, PM me, I have a pump from an 83 300D sitting on my shelf collecting dust. It worked fine when it was pulled from the parts car.

How the hell does the OP have the balls to post this on a forum when he hasn't even taken the time to run an eyeball over the PS system? I mean there's what, like 5 parts in there and TONS OF ROOM, it isn't like it would take more than 10-15 seconds to find a leak that's dumping out a system capacity worth of fluid a day!

Wow dude, really?? Give the OP a break, They might not be super mechanically inclined, and are just asking for help. Plus like they said in the first post, they have not had the chance to look it over too much yet. I agree, a massive leak like that would not be too hard to find.

Sorry, this kind of crap really gets under my skin. There's a huge puddle on the floor. The OP is topping off the reservoir once every day or two. Seriously.....how hard is it to look up from the puddle? It isn't like a modern car where everything's encased in a plastic cocoon of beauty panels, it should be painfully obvious what area the leak is coming from. The hood is already open for God's sake... Asking "Where could it be leaking from?" without at least running an eye over it is just asking for the reply "From any of it".

You will get over it.
It is nice to know specific places to look before you start. Also he might be a person with little automotive type mechanical ability. I mean there are people out there that only own Clothing that you would not want to get under a Car with.

Cinnamonandgravy don't let someone's response prevent you from asking questions. Remember the people that answer are human and sometimes have a bad day or forgot to take their Meds or both. (A smiley face should go here.)

Or perhaps irritated that someone with enough aptitude to look at the PS hoses and state that the steering box was rebuilt in their original post didn't give any information as to where the leak was located in relation to the car or even bother to "look up" from the puddle on the floor. Answering the OP's question without at least a vague idea where the leak is located is little more than wild guessing.

I read the same thing and was not irritated.

Do you have a choice or control over how you react to things?

Example: I am standing in line at the local market and the person in front of comes backwards and steps on my Foot and it hurts.

I could use that as justification to punch them. Or I could just be understanding that I have inadvertently stepped on someone myself in the past.

In short I can blame the person for stepping on me but I can;t blame them for my response.

Diseasel is simply straight to the point, cut and dry. No sugar coating the situation.

All OP has to do is buy a can or two or brake clean, and hose it down and then look.

Post Response

I never skip my meds....... .

Time to try the purple de greaser (damn it cold out side) and clean it up so the source if the leak can be determined .
