Dash out- what are these?

Hey all,

So I'm doing a full interior swap from the donor car I'm parting out, and I'm trying to assess a few (dozen) things while I'm in there.

Disclaimer, climate control is a mystery to me, I've had so many monovalve diaphragms over the years die in the dead of winter I always end up ripping them out and doing a direct connect so I can have heat. I would like to have fan again some day...even AC. but I'm dealing with two 82s so.....thats another thread entirely. Trying to sift through the forum to see if I can even figure out/afford to...

ANYHOW I digress-

1) this was disconnected in both cars, the coupling foam was rotted... what even is this and do I really need special foam to reconnect?

Dash out- what are these?-img_3066.jpg

2) Was this wire run through the stereo bracket for a reason? I had to cut it to remove the console

Dash out- what are these?-img_3067.jpg

3) What is this, it's always just...been there in all of my cars. (and yes a mouse made a home in the blower motor, so fun to deal with)

Dash out- what are these?-img_3068.jpg

Any other words of wisdom before I put the new dash in?

I'll be starting a long restoration thread soon. Quarantine cabin fever has had me tearing through this all day every day, need to pause to document the work.

Thanks,

Bates

Thumbs up

You're a busy boy ! .

The first thing is the temperature sensing tube, easy to add a joint to it, I don't use foam .

the last thing is the antenna connection for the original car telephone .

? What route did you take to fix the fan motor ? . new ir just brushes & cleaning ? .

How about some pics of the finished job .

Further clarification: Nate is correct, the first picture is the temperature sensing tube. The white plastic portion of the tube attaches to the bottom of the small vent on the top/center of the dash.

I'm actually a busy lady!
I figure after 10 years here (mostly reading!) I can unmask.

I'm going to start a thread here rather than in restoration projects I think so I can get some w123 specific input when needed.

The fan motor was fine, it just needed a good brushing and all the walnuts removed....

Thank you, makes sense why it was useless to me as my climate control has a single mode, ON AND HOT.

lbj - if needed I have a very complete set of written instructions concerning the removal and installation of a W123 dash that I would be glad to send you for free. I just need your email address. Thanks. Bill Whitmore

A few months ago, I replaced the heater core on my 1980 W123 240d. If I had the dashboard out on a nice W123 that I plan on keeping, I would pull the HVAC box to remove & power wash the A/C evaporator, replace the vent pod diaphragms and replace the heater core or at least its o-rings. The heater core I removed had a visible leak from a failed o-ring pipe seal.

If anyone is interested, the heater core I used was "VAN WEZEL 30006102 Heizung" from amazon.de.

It was working prior to cleaning the evaporator, but I haven't recharged the system yet to see if that cleaning made a huge difference in performance. I don't really expect modern-car A/C out of a W123 (without modifications like a parallel flow condenser) though and just drive a modern car when it's too hot out in the summer.
