If a CD is like a sedan... someone jump in to confirm please...remove the first aid kit on the back shelf to access the fuel gauge sender. Remove the sender and look into the tank, if it is clean good, if not pull it and have it professionally cleaned.

Good luck!!!

Reading your posts:
1. Is such a pleasure and often educational.
2. Makes operating and maintaining my 300D even more fun than it already is.

My recommendation is to get a "diesel bug" treatment from a marine supply store if you can. If not, then from auto supply store. A lot of people swear by the Star Brite or Star Tron diesel additive and I have used that. If that doesn't work, you could try swapping out your primary (the small in-line) filter. If that doesn't work, maybe the large filter.

The transparent (in line) filter is most often easily diagnosed with a quick visual check. If it looks like there is any grit, change it. Then use the primer pump to re-establish pressure before cranking.

Grateful to everyone in this thread for the wise advice. This time last week I had no idea if my issue was even related to the low fuel in the tank. Now that my car is running smoothly, I can feel confident that there isn't a major mechanical issue, and I have a plan of action in the next few weeks to clean the tank. Thanks to all!!

It sounds to me like it could have been an air leak. Those tend to make themselves known at idle and can mimic symptoms you have when running out of fuel.
