Trunk lid wont open on '85 300D
Bad day at BlackRock. Tried to open my trunk and the key turned both ways like it always has but the push button wouldn't go in. I have no door/trunk vacuum system and have converted all the locks to manual years ago. I read all the posts on this common problem and I removed the first aid kit and tried the bamboo rod trick. Bad sign was that someone had already removed the lock access plate. I slid the rod/spring gadget while wifey tried the trunk button. Wouldn't push. I think the lock must be defective. Any ideas, boys? I though about taking the backseat out but there are bulkheads and the gas tank attaches inside the trunk so I guess that wont work. NOW what? I have had this car 14 years.

This might sound silly
Is the dust cover still there? Mine was broke off and stuck inside the lock so I had all sorts of key / operation issues. The cover itself and the spring Last edited by jsb357; 10-07-2020 at 01:35 PM. |

I don't know if this results in permanent damage to the body or not. I read it in one of the threads (find the thread?).
The Guy said he does this at the Junk Yard when he wants to open a Trunk. While someone else applies light upwards pressure on the Trunk Lid you take a short length put a 2x4 on end just to the right of the Trunk Lock and give it a swift blow with a heavy hammer. When you do this you are attempting to jar the locking hook away. Others have drilled out the lock Tumbler. I don't know if this is possible as I have never read of anyone trying it. On the inside of the Trunk is 2 holes to access the 2 Bolts that hold the Trunk Lock on. I can't remember if they are 10, 11 or 12mm heads on them. But they are hex heads not allen heads. Some other Member will likely know what size. If you got enough extensions it might be remotely possible to get that with the correct socket into the holes and unscrew he bolts. I think that is a lot harder then the bamboo pole thing. Attached pics. One shows the 2 bolt hole locations and in the other I show where the lock side bolt holes are located. In the case of the lock side you could cut the lock housing on the yellow dotted lines or try to drill where the bolt holes are. Note on the electric cut off tool that is a really old harbor freight price expect it to cost more now. The also have pneumatic cutoff tools.

I considered the linked extensions idea but I decided that wouldn't work because it takes a perfect alignment to loosen the 10 mm nut thru a small access hole. I actually got it loose with help by pushing the trunk lid toward the front of the car while simultaneously lifting hard upward and finally while giving hard blows with a big rubber hammer beside the trunk lock and on the top as well!! It took 2 people of course and my 6'5" son in law provided the muscle. Yay!. I took the lock assembly apart to find the problem and it was a worn plastic cam . It must have worn because of the dust you get from being in the back of the car. I replaced the lock assembly with a cleaned junkyard lock which happened to still have a key and I am back in business. |
