Now ya talkin' like a real scientist complete with control group and the whole shebang!

Was is the "Snorting Dragon" brand that shows a red dragon with orange flames coming out of its nostrils on the package?

Ah, yes, those brash Bosios, old chap, jolly good bit of Italian kit I say!

Bosio does spray a smidge more fuel

German made - German quality.
I put a new set of Monarchs from Kent in my 240D without pop testing and it starts acceptably, idles perfectly but still smokes at startup. I put a set of Bosios in my 85 300D again without pop testing and the change was far more dramatic. Power noticeably increased and economy which was in the 27-29 range hwy went up to 31-32 and it starts instantly and shuts off immediately. I think I might lean to Bosios but I thought they were gone from the market. Anyone know a supplier?

Like the cars Daimler AG started building from the 2000's (some would say (late) 90's) on?

At the diesel giant site the Bosio BN 0 SD 261 nozzles were listed as no longer available.
Also the site Kermatdi that sells Bosio direct injection nozzles that used to sell the IDI nozzles no longer sells them.

There is Monarks and Fiarads on regular eBay the ones I saw said from Germany on them and I took that to mean the sellers were in Germany.

Post Rebuilt Injectors

I have a pop tester but after fooling with injectors (new, used, rebuilt and junkyard) a while I decided to try some from Greazzer and IIRC he balanced them within 5# and the improvement in smoothness and tractable power was instant along with a jump in fuel economy, this is very important to me : I want ZERO SMOKE and decent fuel economy ~ if I need more power I'll give the foot feed more and shift later .

They now have 40,000 + miles on them and the engine shakes a lot at idle, maybe it's time I yanked and pop tested them again .

Anyways, not everyone wants to do the detail works and with Greazzer you know you're getting what you paid for .

When did you do your last valve adjustment?

If your Fuel Pressure Relief/Overflow Valve is not holding the pressure high enough at idle it can be the cause of shaking.

Is there a way to test for this on a OM616.916?

I have not tried Monark nozzles, but I am beyond happy with the Firads.
I am very intrigued with your comment of using "one size larger than stock" injectors on your 5 cylinder 617. What is your opinion of using the OM606 Nozzles on the 4 cylinder in the 240D for a couple of additional foot lbs of torque that this engine so desperately needs?
Thanks!

I am curious about this also. The fuel injection pump meters the fuel regardless of what Injectors you have.

The only thing I can think of is that if the nozzle tip of your injector has a larger hole in it or the Pintel/needle lifts higher then the stock Nozzles the more fuel could be injected in a shorter time. But that time would not be much.
If you had your pump modified to put out more fuel then a Nozzle with a larger hole in it may be of benefit because it needs to get all of the fuel out in the same time as the stock nozzles.

With your engine it would be best to ensure all is working correctly and spot on. There is some credence that a slight advance injection timing helps acceleration.

In the past there used to be turbocharger kits with a small turbo and different manifold and exhaust set up that is claimed to have worked in a little added boost.

I adjusted the valved less than 10,000 miles ago and I installed the improved relief valve spring from Greazzer a while back, it had no appreciable effect, I blew up my pressure test gauge by not adding a restrictor / air bubble to it, oops .

I was a really nice American made gauge too =8-( .

Thanx for the remidner, I may just check the valve gaps again .

As a long time air cooled Mechanic / owner / operator I'm keenly aware of how critical valve gaps are .
