Evaporator and heater core replacement: what's the consensus?

Now that I've converted my 1987 300TD to a 5 speed, it's a keeper. The car is solid and runs great. Although it's something of a running restoration project, every time I install a new part it gets just a little bit better.

The next big job is the HVAC. Although the heat works great, the A/C has never worked since I've owned the car. What's more, most of the vacuum actuator pods have given up the ghost.

I've talked myself into getting inside the dash and replacing or repairing the pods. Do I also replace the heater core and evaporator while I'm in there? Although the heater core isn't leaking, the condition of the evaporator is unknown. Likely they're the factory installed parts.

Just wondering what the consensus is. Is it worth taking on the arduous task of heater core and evaporator R&R, or should I leave well enough alone?

Many thanks,

Corvo Gold

Decide after you pull the dash and can look at the parts. You don't want to go in twice and current parts may not be as good as what's there if undamaged.
