1995 om606 into 1991 300d w/ om 602 questions

I own a 1991 300d that I bought in So. California with a blown om602 turbo engine. I also own a 1995 e300 diesel with an om606 n/a that was rearended. I want to put the engine from the 1995 into the 1991. I have a friend that knows everything about Prius'. He tells me it can't be done. I say it can. They are both 124 chassis cars, no computers, etc. We are disagreeing if this can be done simply or not. Anything can be done with money but that is not the way I want to do it. I have both cars in my possession so I would need to chase parts. I have a complete donor car.

Am I being foolish thinking this can be done easily or am I in dreamland?

Prius guy isn't familiar with these cars it seems. Yes it is an easy straightforward swap. Even more so with entire donor car present. Your plan is a good one, go for it. Your 1995 om606 is especially easy to deal with, compared with the later om606 years that have all kinds of electronic controls and sensors. Take care of all the maintenance stuff on the om606 once you have it out of the car, much easier to do without the confines of an engine bay in your way. Please post pics here as you go, this is a nice project, good luck with it.

I need more ammo to convince him. He has the shop that I want to use with lift and tools. Are there any thread of something similar being done.

I don't see what more ammo he would need.

Same chassis. Same fuel. Same transmission?

Likely that some of the temp sender locations are different and you need to determine parity between the two engines. Make wiring harness adjustments as necessary.

The throttle cables are different, so you'll want to swap that over from your donor.

Exhaust is different, so you'll need at least the downpipe. Not sure if it's the same from the middle resonator to the tips.

Google for w124 superturbo. You'll get lots of hits. Loads of youtube vids too. The w124 chassis is a very popular one for swapping in the turbo 606. Putting a normally aspirated 606 into w124 is even easier. It's literally one of the easiest engine swaps imaginable, you can finish it inside of a weekend - to include the test drive and celebratory beers.

Once the om606 is bolted into the new car, the ONLY wires it needs to start and run, are the starter, and the wire to the glow plugs. That's it. Then you can drive it home. Your '91 300d is already wired for an electric starter and glow plugs, so it's plug-n-play. Prius-dude likely has Priuses on the brain, with computers, drive-by-wire controls, and a tangled mess of wires and sensors required to make everything work. Your '91 and '95 diesels are stone-age simple in comparison.

Sounds like they're just being stubborn. No turbo complications, all parts and linkages are at hand, there's no ODBII to mess with. Only thing that might give you trouble is cali laws restricting swaps, but not even cause the newer engine is going into the older body.

California doesn’t have laws restricting swaps I swap a 602 turbo into a 190E i went to the DMV they checked the engine and I got on the mail a week later the new pink slip as diesel no more smog check. Swapping a 606 into a 91 300D is simple the exhaust is different but you have a donor. And you can sale the parts that you don’t use. Is the head from the 602 good ? A friend is looking for one

You guys are awesome. This will help. As far as California is concerned, they only smog 1998 and newer diesels. Both of these are pre-1998. Thank you for the input.
