Sugru is just silicone with talc filler I believe.

You're technically right that Sugru is a mixture of silicone and talc primarily, but it's seemingly simple composition has many unique properties. Even when cured it has the ability to expand and contract with temperature, and has a soft rather than hard finish.

This is important for dashboard repair, because dashes are subjected to a wide range of temperatures, and to have something that is strong but not rigid, and tolerant of such temperature variants seems really appropriate for this kind of job. And it sticks to anything.

It was invented by a female Irish chemical engineer, and the name of the product is derived from an Irish word meaning "play."

Does Plastex have these kind of properties?

When the sunny south’s heat comes home , fingers crossed no odors.

That’s still amazingly quick. Detail work like that is a time bandit

This may have cracked the code for cracked dashes. Thanks for taking the risks and challenges

Here are some shots in natural light. I started to put it all back together. Im also attempting to wash the liner that goes inside the dash... wish me luck lol. A couple pieced of the wood trim needed to be reglued so they are in the press right now.

That is fantastic work, congratulations.

Fortunately I only had to change color on the dash of my w126.

Yeah, I was just saying that because for sugru is a lot cheaper if bought as silicone and talc and then combined later.

I'm not Sugru sure it's as simple as mixing silicone of undetermined quality with talc in a bowl. Manufacturing isn't just about ingredients, but process.

And Sugru comes in different colors, so that you can match your dashboard.

I was wrong, corn starch instead of talc.

Have it your way, I'm just pointing out that that flour, eggs, brown sugar, white sugar, butter and chocolate chips cost a lot less per lb than chocolate chip cookies. If this wasn't a DIY site it would just have a sticky for the Mercedes classic center restoration shop.

And that corn starch, silicone and paint all cost way less than the $.5/gram that you'll pay for sugru.

With all respect, I don't think DIY means reinventing the egg. The project which started this thread uses manufactured materials, and I am not sure there is any advantage to trying to duplicate Sugru. Again, ingredients are not the whole story, and matching colors on top of that seems an unnecessary expenditure of time and effort.

And regarding your chocolate chip cookies analogy, if you were right then all chocolate chip cookies would taste the same, but they do not.

Post Yes & No

I believe it's good to share various methods .

I like to gather as much info as I possibly can then read through it all and figure out which way will work best for me .

Everyone has different skills and works in different ways .

I've been working out in the open on the ground for so many decades that I have fine tuned my methods, I don't think I'll ever have access to a proper shop again, not even a work bench yet I manage to muddle through .

I hope everyone here watched the recent you tube video of a guy in Russia who took a completely rusted and ruined Ural Motocycle completely apart, then restored & rebuilt it .

He didn't have access to the many things we do here in the U.S.A. so he mixed up many different chemicals to do what he wanted to do. de rusting re plating and so on .

I'd be worried about the fumes and HAZ-MAT aspects of some of his works but he apparently knew what the was doing just as both of you here do .

For me, this forum is like FEE TECHNICAL SCHOOL ~ I've had a lot of factory, dealer and Tech school training yet I'm still learning .

THANK YOU ALL ! .

Peter4, I think you're just arguing to authority, without authority. You've suggested a repair material you haven't used and with a recipe for a substitute given saying it could not possibly be suitable because it's not 'manufactured'.

I've posted a recipe and pointed out that sugru costs 50 cents a gram which as the recipe points out, gets expensive if you're filling large voids, or if it spoils, as it does in my experience. Silicone costs like 2 cents a gram and corn starch is half a cent per gram. If anyone is laid off and quarantined, I can bet which dash filler it would make sense to try.

Furthermore, the recipe describes how to vary the ratio to suit the application, and you've defined the only manufactured cookie as 'perfect, stop cooking', again without tasting it.

Has anyone actually tried using sugru? I’ve tried silicone alone with little to no success, largely because it’s too runny to shape. For people with minor cracks, sugru could be a nice option?

I've always liked the look of painted dashboards ( which match the colour of the car , like my old MG )

Wonder how that would look like on a benz
