OM617 Timing using clamp on meter?

Hey guys..

So I finally got my 300SD running decent after rebuilding the injectors and swapping the injection pump.

Being the first time I've used a "drip" timing method, I'm pretty sure it isn't spot on. I THINK I've got it a bit on the retarded side as there isn't much "rattle" at idle like most 617s and a consistent grey/white haze.

It starts super easy and shuts down firm. Doesn't appear to be burning oil or coolant.

I've got a clamp on style timing meter that I typically use on my IH engines and would like to use it on the 617 to verify timing. I'm sure the spec isn't the same since it is a different method.

Does anyone know what the timing should be set to when using a clamp on style "pulse" timing meter?

Is there any way to verify that the timing is exact or close to it? Should I just advance it a bit and see if the haze goes away?
