84 300sd W126 Climate system overhaul

Hi Everyone,

I am planning on getting my climate system running on my 1984 300SD. I found a Sanden compressor and a Klimakit bracket at a junkyard for $24. I'm keeping the stock evaporator and running R12. I plan to pull the dash and do a complete overhaul.

Here's what I plan on doing:

- replace/test each vacuum pod.
- replace all rubber vacuum connectors
- test/servce blower
- replace all foam, clean and seal all air passage ways.
- Pull condensor, clean, vacuum test. Install new lines.
- replace monovalve, clean heater core, replace lines
- replace lamps with LEDs, where applicable and won't cause bulb alert.
- clean gauges, service, lubricate
- lubricate all mechanical items
- inspect air compressor, test.
- new HVAC refrigerant lines, dryer, expansion valve.

Are there any other things I should check/service/install while I have this all taken out? Thank you.

Theseus owned a ship in Greek mythology, and when a part of the ship needed replacing, it was replaced. Eventually, everything was replaced. Is it the same ship? (I own the car of Theseus. )

I’d consider high and low pressure switches and verifying that the electric cooling fan works.

As for LEDs in the dash, I used them for the cluster lighting and the glow plug light. It looked like all of the other warning lights are part of a circuit which won’t work right with LEDs. I have not gotten to the center console yet and the window switches came with LEDs from the factory.

This is a picture of the inside of the box where the evap lives on an SD before cleaning. Left is the evap, right is the plastic of the box. Note leaves, twigs, compost and bird feather at the far end. Might want to have a look inside yours. Access (very cramped) by removing blower.

Fabbing some sort of filtration at the air intake might also not be a bad idea, though regular vacuuming of windshield/under-hood nooks and crannies could suffice.

Going back to R12 is a good idea. If you cannot find R12, You can look at Duracool or Envirocool. I have been using Duracool for my R12 systems. It does work very well.

The more I look into Duracool, the more it looks to be the better solution. Does not use as much refrigerant as others and less pressure than r134a. Did you replace your evaporator with a parallel flow or just keep the stock?

I think you're referring to a parallel flow condenser. I've run both Duracool and Envirosafe in a stock set up. Works great at speed. Somewhat less so at idle. Much less strain on the system and no corrosive chemicals formed as with r134.

I've seen R134 systems on 300sd require repair every 1 1/2 to 3 years.
