I have a ‘76 240d that I use as my daily driver that is in good shape and has been running fine until today. I got home from work, my commute home is about 25 minutes, did some stuff around the house for about an hour and then went to run some errands. Starts fine, put it in gear and nothing. No forward. No reverse. Nothing. The fluid looks fine. A little dirty but still red. Doesn’t smell burnt or anything. The level was good maybe even a little high but my driveway is not quite level. The linkage is connected. I pushed it into the garage and put the car up on jack stands. Started it and put it in gear the passenger side wheel will move but only in one direction. Drive and reverse move the same way. Other than changing the fluid I’m not sure what I should be looking for.
