edit: T stood for transport and touristik, according to Mercedes. touristik = touring FWIW Hotels used to have a very simple horse drawn wagon for carrying luggage from the train station to the hotel = station wagon

Also from the same source in post 18: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W123
T for Tourismus und Transport (estate/station wagon) (S123) At the 1977 IAA in Frankfurt, the first-ever factory-built estate, S123, was introduced. The letter T in the model designation stood for Tourismus und Transport (Touring and Transport). Previous estates had been custom-built by the coachbuilders, namely Binz. S123 production began in April 1978 at Mercedes-Benz Bremen factory. All engines except the 2-litre version of the M115 were available in the range.

The closest to VW ownership I got was when I threatened to buy a late 60's Beetle as my first car. Dad said no. What did I get? A Renault 12 Estate. AKA station wagon.

The car was in good shape other than needing spark plugs.
The first few years went well, it did every thing I asked of it but my being a teenage driver plus my iffy mechanical skills wore it down over time. Had I been less hard on it, it would have lasted many more years than it did. It was comfortable, fun to drive in the rolypoly French car way and had a huge cargo space. Dad and I loaded a washing machine in the back and still closed the hatch. I kind of miss it and admit to having a Corgi ho scale model of one. Did I mention I learned to drive in a ‘69 Peugeot 504? Happy French Cars
Pops was a big fan of Peugots , we had a 403 (? 304?) then a really sweet 1967 404 'Break' (means station wagon in French), that one was superb and my sister had to beat it to death, running it out of oil finally killed it .
Then a greay market 504 wagon from Canada.... The French are _really_ weird, once you grasp the concept that they do things THEIR WAY and forget anyone else, they are IMO, pretty good if really weird, cars . I had a 1959 Citroen 2CV for a while, it too had that wonderful cloud like ride and I couldn't make it loose traction no matter how fast I drove it . I had a 1963 Renault Dauphine with Ferlec electronic clutch, Tom Mcayhill loved them, I wasn't able to make mine work properly so it got towed and scrapped .

Oh dear, French car are an issue in my family. Except for my sister. She had a Pinto. Dad bought what was probably the first new Dauphine in Alaska in ‘60 or ‘61. He drove a Caravelle daily until he got the R17 Gordini. My brothers first car was an R15.
A buddy parked his non running 4CV in our driveway for a while, we took turns lifting the front wheels off the ground by dead lifting the bumper. I later owned 3 Caravelles and dad’s 505STI. He traded up to a pair of 405’s, a plain one for mom and whatever the fancy one was for himself. I’ve seen and played with a non running R10 (R8?) with the Ferlec clutch and auto manual 3 speed gearbox. I really wanted to drive it but the owner got rid of it before we got it running. And then I found Mercedes. The 300SD is my fifth and the Mrs just found a very clean ‘68 230 she said I could have and that I’d love to have if it weren’t 10K Michael |

Cheap Imports
Tiny fun to toss around little cars are -so- much fun ! .
In the 1950's and 1960's quite a few Fiats, Renaults, Vauxhauls and so on were sold due to this factor ~ the price got the customer in the door and the easy to drive got them hooked, the sad state of after sale support did them all in .

I daily drive a 850 Spider one summer. No reverse and the top didn’t latch but it was a blast to drive.
Hopefully we haven’t upset someone by hijacking the thread… Michael |

Topic Drift
Well ;
The original poster seems a good sort and not the type to have the fake outrage that drives that other crowd . If e says 'please stop guys' I expect we will . I like to learn new things and generally enjoy it when a topic drifts... Others have closed minds and can't handle this simple part of human nature .
