+1 on Canada's input. Those ratcheting little pass-through wrenches are perfect for glow plugs. Saves quite a bit of time, especially if you are reaming.

I also use ratcheting box wrenches. It was very tedious before I got a set of metrics at HF. As I recall, 8 mm for the electrical nut and 10 mm for the glow-plug body though vaguely recall perhaps some being 12 mm. I've run a tap thru a few times, but never found any of the carbon debris that people speak of. I've been documenting glow-plug changes in my 2 300D's and some have lasted only 22K miles (VSP and CFP Chinese brands I recall, though might be Autolite and Champion too).

same here, just a little carbon dust came out when I reamed mine.

it got down to freezing here. went out in the morning, glowed the plugs, the motor started i n half a turn.
I guess all of my old plug plugs were dead LOL

I agree ive never seen a lot of carbon when reaming with a tool or drill bit (7mm iirc?). I always vacuum out the holes though...

I've reamed 3 different engines now, and they all came out like Diesel911's picture. Not sure if it made a noticeable differnece, but it sure was satisfiying.

that seems like the worst FUklng wrench for glow plugs.

the Gearwrench flex head are the best.

haha FAIL
'Dogbone' multiwrenches are for people that don't have a tool box, or any tools.
And nothing from China is "express" now,
except maybe fentanyl and government crack pipes.

In my 1984 and 1985, I could see the interior of the pre-chambers when I had the injectors out (for compression test & pop-testing). There was no carbon in there and I could see the suspended balls. People have posted drawings which show that some pre-chambers are different, with a throat which makes viewing inside impossible. Perhaps those are the ones which collect carbon. My 1985 has a 1982 engine now, but don't recall seeing a throat in any of my 3 engines. Perhaps that throat was in 1970's engines. With injectors out, it was good to view the glowplugs to insure they all glowed at the tips, since some have the hot-spot in the middle where it does less good.
