mystery 617: "Original Mercedes-Benz Tauschaggregat" = Replacement motor?
I am in the middle of an engine swap and am trying to find out some information about a mystery motor I picked up. I found a 617 from an informal (backyard) junkyard as a possible candidate for a replacement motor in my wagon, which currently has poor compression in 2 cylinders. Anyways, I found a badge stamped on the front of the engine block titled "Original Mercedes-Benz Tauschaggregat", followed by 3 identification numbers: Teil-Nr:#, Bm #, and Agg.Nr#.
I did a quick Google search and found someone commenting on this badge in a different forum. Apparently it signifies a MB factory replacement motor. Has anyone ever seen this badge? What do the various numbers mean? (See the photo, attached, but the numbers are unreadable in the photo). Teil Nr. 617010640288 Bm.: 617.962 I am particularly interested in trying to decipher what the engine number means, what chassis it might have been intended for, and what year it was manufactured or shipped for replacement. Has anyone ever heard of a 617.962? Does 962 signify anything in particular? Are the chassis number and production year coded in the Teil Nr.? The only other option I can think of is to contact the MB Classics Center, but I don't know if they track replacement motor information (i.e. when it was shipped, what car it went into, etc.). Any ideas? Thanks.
