Help identify engine rattle, w115

Hey Folks,

I'm looking at a w115 from out of state, i'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what this engine rattle might be? It's been too long for me to tell if this is a normal OM616 diesel noise or something else?

Thanks!

Cool car. Is that a timing chain slapping around possibly? Since it isn't consistent.

Did the sound change once the engine was warmed up?

Just sounds like injectors nailing to me.

if you blip the throttle and hear a slap, its the chain, otherwise sounds like nailing. I wouldn't run that engine long without first rebuilding the injectors.

Turns out the mechanical cooling fan was the culprit.

Nice! That's one of the best things it could've been. Enjoy the car
