1982 OM617 fuel filter housing leak at crush washer

After fighting to just get a replacement crush washer and O ring, IT STILL LEAKS!!!

The replacement I got was copper and not aluminum. I don't imagine that is the problem? I have it on there plenty tight. I can't imagine that tightening it any more will fix it.
Any suggestions?

The first picture is with UV light.

Copper rings is perfectly fine. Was the replacement the same width and thickness as the old one?

Also, you want to make sure the surfaces are free and clear of any dirt or debris

I'll check the surfaces. Is there any advantage to the M22 rubber impregnated crush washer in place of the copper or aluminum ones?

My experience is:
The copper washers always leak, they will damage the aluminum housing if you overtorque them to attempt to stop them from leaking.
The aluminum ones leak as they age and several filter changes have happened due to them flattening out and then the bolt bottoms out in the housing before the crush washer gets tight.
The M22 Rubber impregnated washer has never leaked thusfar.

Jarod, where have you ordered the rubber washers?

Which housing do you have? -01 or -02?

I doubt that the issue is related the design being bad or the surface being damaged, but rather you don't have the proper washer or haven't replaced one of the seals. From the picture the crush washer you have seems undersized to the sealing surface of the housing and the adaptor head.

I'll measure the ones I have when I get home. I would caution against using a rubber backed washer or even a rubber washer and metal washer combination. The crush washer allows for a tighter seal and higher torque to the fastener (adaptor in this case).

Edited: Checked all three filter housings I have running, all three are 02 versions and all three have copper crush washers. I measured the 01 housings I had in a box and they seem to take the same copper crush washer (although they were disassembled).

I anneal my copper washer, hold it with a piece of wire and get it red hot with a propane torch. Annealing softens copper, allowing it to better conform to its contact areas. (bolt & housing)

I got them on amazon, I'm not sure what the rules are for links, so here is a link and the title of the part in case the link needs to be removed later on:

X AUTOHAUX 25pcs 18mm ID. 24.5mm OD.Bronze Tone Car Engine Oil Drain Crush Flat Bonded Washer Gaskets

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07T9TLSVZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

Also wouldn't hurt to replace the o-ring on the bolt:
since you have a crush washer, that means you should have an 01 style housing, so you will need one of these:
-M2.5x10 Viton Fluoroelastomer O-Ring: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005RUSH4Y/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

And if anyone has the 02 housing that uses 2 o-rings instead of the single o-ring and crush washer:

One of these: -M2.5x10 Viton Fluoroelastomer O-Ring
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005RUSH4Y/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

And then one of these: -M2.5x14 Viton Fluoroelastomer O-Ring
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005RUSJOW/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

I've had great success with the rubber washer, but as with anything, your results might vary, but I'm happy not leaking $5 a gallon diesel everywhere, and not having to get a 3/4 inch impact out to attain that with the crush washer.
I can snug it down good where the washer crushes down and the gasket on the filter itself makes a nice seal as well.

I bought an 02 housing because I had tried everything to get that 01 housing to stop leaking, copper washer, aluminum washer, plastic washer from ace, nothing would seal that stupid thing up. I was getting the stuff around to convert to the 02 housing that has no crush washer when someone suggested using one of those rubber impregnated washers, and I've been thrilled with the results.

Twenty some years and no leaks! Now it leaks, what happened, what changed?
Change the seal or seals, surface the filter housing ,File out the grooves ,untill flat again,
renew aluminum seal reinstall bolt,no more leaks.
If looking carefully any cracks in sealing surface can be seen while filing.

My 82 took a 0039975848 O ring and a copper 007603018101. I crossed out 0009970048 aluminum washer in my log. It must have leaked with that. I remember having a hard time figuring out what the right parts were for this filter head.

I am reasonably certain that an '82 model would have departed Stuttgart with an aluminum seal ring installed.

A brand new copper washer won't need this, but after being installed and torqued down it may work harden slightly. Annealing it with a torch is a trick one can use to reuse a copper crush washer in a pinch.
