Help me find the right alternator?

It's an '83 240D.

The old alt stopped charging. This is my daily driver so I went to the parts store and got a Delco rebuilt to get it back on the road ASAP. It's the wrong one! The nose is too short, so the fan and pulley from the old one won't work. The old one has a roughly 3/8" spacer in the stack, the shaft on the new one is a bit more than 3/8" too short.

The old one is a Motorola, made in France, says Mercedes on the label.

The alternator on the Peachparts website is a week or two away, but worse yet it looks identical to the Delco unit, which doesn't fit.

How can I be sure of getting one that will work?

By the way, my mounting bracket uses the L-bolt. Here are a few photos of old and new-wrong.

The used alternator is a Motorola Alternator. likely why it is not a direct fit with the new one. I also thought that the electrical connector was a different size.

Apparently in the past Motorola sold them as an upgrade.
Motorola Alternator for Mercedes Benz

You find Mortola Alternators on Forklifts and other industrial engines. The Diesel Generators for refer units that I used to work on mostly had Mortola Alternators.

You could take the Motorola to an auto eclectic shop and as for a quote on rebuilding it.

Note that some Mercedes also came with a different type of fender mounted Glow Plug relay that is really expansive to replace.

Are you sure you’re running all of the original brackets and mounting hardware?

What you have there is a very hard to find high output (51 amperes Vs. 35) alternator .

I'd have it rebuilt at you local Auto Electric Shop, they'll prolly just clean it up and install new brushes .

As Sherm mentions, maybe a picture of the mounting brackets .

Not sure if, like my name, that was a typo, but where are you getting 51 and 35 from?
Standard is either 55 or 65amps…?

Looks like the label on the old one states 51 amps.

Exclamation DUH ! .

Sorry Shern ! .

You're right of course, in my muddled memory I was thinking of those 1960's low output alternators .

Leece-Neville and Motorola made higher output ones for use in taxis and police cars .

I'm a twit .

I'd still like to see the mounts, from these pictures it looks like the BOSCH one will fit, I occasionally have to remove a flat washer spacer to make the pulley align .

I just threw out several 1985 65 ampere alternators, no one wants hard parts any more until something breaks .

See the attached picture. That is the voltage regulator. I have never seen one apart but If you remove that you will get to see inside. and perhaps see if the brushs and such are worn down.

There is one on ebay listed as a Alternator Generator Lima Mercedes-Benz (C123) 230 Ce A0061540102
Unfortunately they want a lot of shipping cost to ship it.

Attached is the picture of the tag on the eBay alternator.

I was eventually able to adapt the new one to the old mounts, using bits and pieces from the old alternator on the parts car, which looked very much like the new one, except for a nasty bearing rumble.

The nose is shorter, and there is no room for that spacer, but the pulleys from the parts car line up close enough there is no squeal. The parts car had the rack and pinion style adjustment, but somehow that looked even flakier than the L-bolt arrangement, so I went with that.

When I put the parts car pulley stack on the new one, the fan brushed against the crazy-tall screw heads that hold the case together! I eventually realized that I could transfer over the case screws from the parts car alt, and that was what made it all work.

So, the new one is installed, the battery is nicely charged, and I'll be able to drive to work tomorrow.

Thanks, all!

You don't replace alternators because they quit charging. The usual reason is the brushes are shot. Just replace the brushes/regulator setup which screws into the back. You don't even need to take the alternator off. $16 the last time I checked.

No, he is talking about the brush-Vreg assembly. It bolts onto the back of the alternator. Buy on ebay or Amazon. Might even be the same PN for Chevy alternators of the same year. Much easier than swapping out the alternator, given the crowded bay and overdesigned brackets. Disconnect BAT- first.
