OM602 availability in the US?

Hello

Long story short, I have an OM605 I planned to put in my 1982 Euro 240d and then ship it to myself when I move to the US from the UK in September.

Not gonna happen. US regulations prohibit doing so with the newer engine.

I have so many new parts and so much time into this, including a 'super' pump, that I though perhaps I'd ship the car and pick up an OM602 as the pump will fit that engine, as will many of the parts from the OM605.

I'm just not up on the availability of the 602 in the US. I had a 1998 Sprinter 312D here with the 2.9 turbodiesel, but it ran the rotary style fuel pump.

Anyways any assistance would be appreciated!

IIRC the only vehicle we got was the w201 190D (which are tough to find). I believe all of the US sprinters got the OM647 2.7L.

W124 cars have the om602.

Where in the US are you moving? Most places these are classic cars and have very little scrutiny. I can’t imagine a customs person would know the difference between a 616/602/605 engine. Even in states with strict emissions regulations these old cars are often exempted.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I'm not worried about Indiana. It's getting it into Baltimore that's the issue. The DOT and EPA regulations prohibit the car having a different motor than it came with. So even if I put an engine in that was offered in the W123, but not an OM616, it wouldn't work.

I hope someone can prove me wrong. I have a phone number for a stevedore in Bmore that hopefully can help.

I hope you're right.

I have a hard time believing that customs or epa is going to be savvy enough to determine that the Mercedes Diesel engine in the Mercedes is an OM616 vs an OM602. Maybe I’m wrong there… but that’s a lot of scrutiny.

That said, if it is indeed an issue, why not just ship the 602 over and install it here? If you’re going through the effort of shipping the car, I can’t imagine another pallet is that big of a deal (?).

I hear you. Unfortunately the paperwork one must fill out must meet certain criteria. The car must be as it was in 1982 (within reason) esp in terms of the engine that was in it when manufactured. In terms of shipping the engine itself, the same 25 year rule applies. It's more about the numbers matching up, not whether it's an OM6xx this or that. So, as you have suggested my new plan is to get the 605 ready to ship to myself now, while I'm still in Scotland, then store it and have it shipped once it's 25 years old...which is next year...but now I'm trying to sort out the build date of the engine check out this post. Engine build date information?
