Moose lights and the W123 headlight switch

I plan to put moose lights on the front bumper, powered through a relay which will be switched by the high beam voltage, so that the moose lights come on when the high beams are on.

The headlight switch pulls out one notch to turn on the fog lights, and there is a second notch which the manual says is for future use. Would it be possible to put that in series with the control power for that relay, so the moose lights would only come on when the switch is pulled out to the second notch and the high beams are also on? Does anyone have a diagram of that switch?

If you use a relay that should work.

You will need to probe with your voltmeter to see if that 2nd position actually has voltage.

There is free online manual and it has wiring diagrams of the electrical components. I know longer have the copied links for any of them. Someone else will have to post that.

If it has voltage, I won't be able to use it as a dry contact, and I'll have to put in a second relay, or a switch on the dash, or just slave it to my high beams. That'd work, really. If I want the high beams, I'd generally want the driving lights.

There is a wiring diagram for a relay.

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/707065210223015178/

The realy in the attached pic is generically called a bosh relay. Some are square and some have a tab to screw them to say a fire wall.

If you don't want to buy the socket for it you can use female spade connectors on the prongs but you need to record and be careful where the wires go.

The terminal for the second notch is labeled "NS" on the rotary switch. It is a 12V+ source when on. That would be the power source for the relay coil; the other side of the coil would of course be grounded.

It's been a minute since Ive explored the lighting of a Benz, but I know the first position is front fog and think the second is rear fog. I also think the front fogs only come on with the low beams and drop out with the high beams. I don't know for sure if the rear fog does the same but a quick search looks like they are powered by the same wire as the front fogs.

There should be some space in your relay box under the hood. I'd try to grab a pigtail of a Mercedes relay and put it in one of the open spaces.

Mercedes has some of those cube relays in varying amperages, with replaceable fuses.

That's helpful, thanks. I could use that to power the coil of a second relay, in series with the first, so that when the switch is pulled out to the second notch and the high beams are on both relays are pulled in and the moose lights come on. That would be cool enough to warrant the second relay.

That's correct. It would be nifty to have the moose lights come on with the high beams and drop out with the low. Sounds like I can make that happen.

Take this with a grain of salt as I'm looking at a '81 300D diagram since I can't find any of the FSM's I should have on a drive somewhere, but to me it looks like NS will connect to NSE when it's pulled to the second position and NSE is powered from the low beam circuit via fuse 11. There is an unused, and on the diagram I'm looking at unlabeled, terminal that might connect with NS but it's hard to tell. It might be easier to grab power for the relay from fuse 8 which only powers the high beam indicator.

Thumbs up W123 Headlight Switch Diagram

THANK YOU ! .

I've been dipping into my '82 W123's dashboard, it looks like whomever installed the Kenwood CD player long ago simply attacked the inner black plastic with hammer and tongs, no wonder the HVAC never worked properly .

Anyway, I'm about to address it and I want to :

Add a parking light indicator to the dash panel

Made the rear fog lamp indicator in the headlight switch come on with the front fog lamps .

Someone sent me a how-to a while back and I can't seem to find it .

I like to do harness repairs / modifications using the factory wires and end terminals so it all matches ....

This diagram will be very helpful .
