				unlatched hood=smashed windshield!

Driving my son's 240D while Greazzer rebuilds the injectors for my 300SD

Was doing some work on the 240D and stopped when it got dark. I didn't close the hood all the way and forgot about it. Going to work the next day got about a mile from home going about 25mph when all of a sudden--WHAM!-- the wind catches the hood and it comes all the way up to 90* and past and slams into the windshield. The tabs on the hood hinges broke. There's glass all over the dash. I was fine and am glad it happened before I got on the highway to head to work. I'm going to the JY for a hood and cowl. I have some questions. Should the cowl be put in after the windshield gets done? At the same time? Does the fender have to come off to remove the cowl? Any other advice you can give me for the job would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jeff

			Jeff,

This is from memory a loooong time ago, so ... Fenders off to replace cowl? No. Easiest to replace cowl while the windshield is out, but not necessary. Advice? Do the windshield yourself if possible. I can't remember if your fenders have to come off to replace the hinges. Good luck!!!

Thanks for the info. I've read that you can get the hinges out with a 13mm gearwrench after removing hood. Glad to hear the cowl will come off without removing fenders. Insurance is covering all this. Was just going to use Safelite unless some has another suggestion for windshield replacement in the Sacramento area. Attached are some pix of the damage. Jeff

The cowling is held in by push pins. Push the center of the pins through and out and reassemble them for install.

I'd want to be certain that the glass installer has done these windshields before. If it is their first rodeo you are guaranteed bent windshield trim moulding. There is a procedure for these windshields that has to be done in order. Good luck!!!

The Safelite shop did my W126 windshield and they did a good job.

I questioned the installer thoroughly before leaving that car with him and he assured me he had done them before and all was fine. But always happy to go to an indy if someone has a name.

			W123 and W126 are different windshield types/methods.

			The procedure I read is:

window out, seal off, trim off - trim into new seal, seal on window, window in Is that correct? Jeff

I used cut the trim out to prevent bending the trim (this ruins the seal), remove the windshield, clean the frame/channel of the chassis, new seal on new glass, trim into new seal.

Para cord in U channel of seal, place assembly against where it's going with light pressure. Second person goes inside using string to pull the new seal over the lip of the chassis. My local glass shop pumped in sealer along the A pillars. I think they were happy not to do the whole task. Good luck!!!

			YIKES ! .

This is my nightmare . Glad to hear you weren't hurt . I've removed the W123 good hinges with the fenders on but removed them to replace bad hinges .

Turns out that the cowl is welded in, so a JY swap in not happening.

This is not a show car so will probably just leave it as is. At this point I'm just trying to get the hood to close, so will swap out some hinges and then go from there. Jeff
