Caliper repair kit - rear W123

MB part number for rear caliper repair kit is actually 0015867343 (0005861543 previously posted was for earlier cars)

In looking for this, I find some like Pelican show just the outer boot plus the inner square o-ring.

Others show additional items. Anyone know what the large metal rings and the small o-rings are for?

G:

The small o-rings are the seals between the caliper halves; the wire rings are not used on the Ate or Bendix calipers, but may be used on the Girling calipers.

Some caliper boots have metal built inside of the rubber lip to hold them to the caliper so they have no exterior separate spring.

Centric sells caliper rebuilds kits with the small O-ring seal if you split the calipers. If you split the calipers look up the torque for the bolts before you split them.

For some reason most kits don't have heat shields for the reads on ATE calipers.

Thanks for input! I went on EPC and got the correct part number (0015867343). Then was able to order the FTE kits from local store at a good price.

I don't plan on taking the calipers apart, so no need for the o-rings (or those wire rings)

Doing this because one boot had a small (1/4") slit in it. I could have sealed it, but decided to take pistons out and give everything a good clean. Based on rotor condition, I think that piston may have been sticking.

I put new calipers on front, so should be good to go for a while.

PS: Re heat shields - I think only the fronts ever had them.

I already ordered the FTE that many have used. But thanks for the link - could be useful in future. I have a front set of ATEs that I may rebuild. (Bought new ATEs)

One ting I noticed, was that they do sell pistons. They describe them as steel/aluminum. Steel aluminum plated or some steel some aluminum? Not clear.

Of course, but other people read the threads.

I don't know on the pistons. However, I have never seen any aluminum plated pistons in any vehicle.

If the aluminum is anodized, it creates a hard exterior surface.

My FTE kits for rears arrived early - today! I guess I now need to get on and finish the caliper rebuilds!

I got the rear calipers rebuilt a little while ago. Went well and braking now seems great. Should be with new front calipers, rebuilt rear calipers plus new pads and disks all round.

I decided to have a look at the old front calipers. They are ATE and the originals on the car (rebuilt once). The passenger side pistons came out relatively easily, but one piston on driver side is really stuck. No wonder my brakes vibrated.

Given I have brand new calipers on front, I may never need these. I may just give up if that stubborn piston refuses to come out!

I tried air pressure, prying on the groove & heat with no luck. Today I poured penetrating fluid inside the caliper and around the rim of the piston. Letting it soak.

We pay a lot of attention to the finish on the pistons and the inner bore. But really, problem area is cylinder and piston outside of the piston seal groove. Even with boots intact, those areas corrode.
We should check that area any time we are changing pads or notice vibration.

If I get the piston out, I will need to buy repair kits. For later reference:
Centric 143.35007
MB# 0025864442
FTE RKS60100 (0025864442)
ATE 250128.

Frenkit makes repair kits that include new pistons if needed. Believe I got mine shipped from Poland.

Thanks. I will check them out if I ever get the stuck piston out. Where did you buy them? (fudge answer so forum software doesn't delete it!)

May need new pistons if the groove for the boot is corroded or damaged during removal. That and the corresponding groove in the caliper are likely where moisture and salt get in and cause corrosion at the end of the piston and cylinder.

I don't give up easily, but I have given up on resurrecting those calipers. That one piston was frozen in there and must have been for some time. Tried pressure, leverage, heat, penetrating fluid, soaking al to no avail. Happy I went with the new ATE front calipers right at outset. These will go to recycling along with a collection rotors that seem to have accumulated!

They can’t be sent as cores someplace? While I get the hard time you had, some parts may be salvageable. We’re dealing with a growing “NLA” crisis…

That was my original plan, but I decided to go with brand new ATE calipers. My parts guy sold them to me for C$325 each including a set of OE pads. No core required.

Someone might have found the cores useful, but not anyone I know locally. The calipers, the disks and gallons of used engine oil are going to recycler tomorrow Got to make space!

Nice that they made actual new ones. Are there any markings on them? What is the country of origin?
