Squished Oil Filter Can Gasket

This was the 350sd I won at auction. Drain plug was overnight, stripped out the head (threads were fine). Had to use an extractor. We pulled the filter and I was wondering where the oring went. Then saw this

I don’t even know how previous owners squashed the ring that far. Filter cap bolts came off ok, didn’t seem overtorqued but who knows.

Don’t know how they got it that bad!

Last oil change at Jacky Lube where they get it all done with nothing more than a 3lb sledge?

Possibly but no quick lube is in the pile of receipts that I have.

To me, it looks as if that o ring has been there a long time for it to heat form itself to the milled channel in the top. Quite possible that it continued to seal so long as the top was fully seated, or, likely techs just swapped in a new oring ontop with each filter change and never gave if more thought. No leaks, no problem.
