I have owned the car for 3 years; never been in the oil pan. The only idea I have is that someone before me removed them and did not torque them properly when they returned them.

Yes sir. Suspecting a problem with the oil pump remove the oil pan for the first time. All I can arrive at is that someone before me must have been in there and failed to torque them properly
