OM-617 injection pump install BTDC

Hello all.

I am installing the injection pump onto my freshly rebuilt OM-617. The FSM spec is to install the pump when the crank is 24.5 degrees BTDC but my understanding is that I can install it anywhere between 24.5 and 26 degrees. Is this correct?

Thanks!
Alex

I set timing in my cars a degree or two advanced and they run fine. Go for it.

something that confuses me is which way advances and which way retards timing?

assuming 24deg to be the factory spec,
is 22deg advanced & 26deg retarded or is it 22deg retarded & 26deg advanced?

thanks, Matteo

26 degrees before top dead center (BTDC) is advanced 1.5 degrees more than 24.5. As the engine rotates it passes 26 degrees BTDC before it comes to 24.5.

Rotating the injection pump towards the engine advances timing.

You need to install the fuel injection pump at the factory specified X degrees before OT (TDC)and it has to be coming up on the compression stroke. And you want the bolts centered in the kidney slots of the fuel injection pump flange so there is room to rotate it either way if you want to rotate it later.

With my own experience with l year old rebuilt injectors with monark nozzles was when I did the advanced the fuel injection pump timing it smoked a bit at idle and was nosier at idle, but it was a bit pepper when I stepped on the pedal. But I put it back to the factory specs. I did not like the noisier idle nor smoke.

Rotating the top of the fuel injection pump towards the engine block advances the fuel injection pump timing.

Thank you 911! Of everyone who has replied to my posts on forums or emails I've sent, you are the first person to actually answer my question! I appreciate you taking the time to read my post.

I installed the pump at 25 BTDC and it is running well...at least in the garage. I am now in the process of getting my transmission dialed in so I can get on the road.

Cheers!
Alex
