Several swap options. I changed to a 1986+ "mono-valve" in my 1985 300D, mounting it where the useless Aux Water Pump used to sit and extending the cable.

In my 1984 300D, I changed to a vacuum-operated valve (generic $12 ebay), controlled by a vacuum switch (old Chrysler or Porsche, forget), installed where the mono-valve used to fit. I used small silicone hose (from motorcycle kit). The later approach is what later M-B used and Klima sells as a retrofit kit ($$$).
