Drivers side lock same as passenger side?

Hi folks:
Is the driver side lock handle assembly on 85 300DT same as passenger side. My drivers side lock is busted and I plan to swap the lock assembly from passenger side if its the same thing.

The chrome handles are different from each other. Part of the locking mechanism may be the same but I seem to remember a couple of differences. All mine have broke in the same general area and have cost about $9.50 for the actual part. Not too bad.

MVK:

My bad. I was only thinking about the inside door handle assembly, not the external one with a key lock. I have not tackled a project like that yet.

Hi Moraine:
Did you get the same key or now you have 2 keys. Is that why they needed VIN so that you could have a same key? Also how much was it and where did you get it from?
Thanks

MVK,

You can take it apart and try to fix it. On my 83 SD I pulled the door handle assembly off and stripped it down to the key cylinder, removed some of those out of shape square inserts. It works fine BUT...almost every MB keys can open that door.

Latest model like 89 300E you'll have to replace the whole thing(can't strip it to key cylinder). If you do swap lock assemply with passenger side you will have to swap two wires on the connector otherwise it will set the factory alarm off when you lock the door. It's been a while I have done that. I don't know about 85's. you can try one of those methods.

The EXTERIOR door handles/lock cylinder assemblies on my 81 300D (W123) are identical. Of course, the car has no alarm sys.
I moved door handle/lock cylinder assembly from driver side to pass. side & vice versa. Not only does this provide little-used lock cylinder to the driver side, but by flipping the handles up-side-down in the process, it also exposes un-weathered chrome to top side that had been previously protected for all those years on the underside on the handles. Not only do the locks/handles work nicely, they look like new, too.

HI Bear:
Hi Bear its not that I did not trust you, its just that I am not sure if the Europe car (which you might have) is same as US car. I have never driven or closely studied any benz other than mine. So I was confused. Also I took your advice---" You should also try posting a request in Parts" --and posted it in parts and might be getting one soon. Thanks a lot.

Hey we all need a second opinion once in a while don't we?

So you can swap them side to side ,I'm having a similar problem with my driver's door lock. The little spring-loaded door is stuck open so it's been getting water in there for a while and the lock gets hard to turn.I've put graphite powder in the lock and this helps, but if I can swap them that would be great.I checked prices at the dealer, hoping to be able to buy just the lock assembly,no luck, the handle and lock were $$.A lock kit that had all the locks on the car was over $800Cdn.The part numbers for each side are different aren't they?

Kyle,as I've also mentioned to MVK be careful when you remove the handle from the vehicle. After you remove the screws it needs to be GENTLY wiggled out, dont just tug and pray! The part which connects the barrel to your door lock is a flat bar approx 2-3 inches long. This has a tendency to snap if not treated with some respect.
I found all this out when I needed to change my own drivers lock, damn door could be opened with a screwdriver when I got it.Well I snapped the bar on the donor car's driver's side handle. So I figured what the hell they look the same,in for a penny in for a pound what had I got to lose.Thank god it fitted that saved me some serious dosh.To make sure you know how to do it I would recommend getting one from a breakers,at least you can have a dry run with the other door. Catch you later.Bear
