Question Replacing primer (hand) pump

I replaced my primary and secondary fuel filters. While using the plastic hand pump to bleed air from the system, it gushed out lots of fuel around it. From reading the forum its time to replace the primer pump. Is it hard to replace or does it just unscrew? Any pointers?

Very easy (although you'll fip the wrench over and over to get a new "purchase" on the hex each little turn as you unscrew it). Make sure you use the new style pump (may be all that's made now). It's quite an improvement in design and user comfort.

I bought one from the dealer a few months back, new design is all that is available, but better than old pump. Cheap price... under $20 I think???

One advantage of the old style pump is that I can tell whether the primary or secondary fuel filter is plugged.

If the plunger pulls up hard, the primary (INLINE) filter is plugged. If the plunger is hard to push, the secondary (CAN) filter is plugged. It the plunger goes hard both ways, both filters are plugged but I have never seen this happen.

I wish the 603 engines had a hand fuel pump.

If I wanted to do it...

on a 1983 300D, all I would need would be the 'diesel primer pump', right? looks like a steel thread with a big round black handle on it? That fastlane says lists for $16 and is for sale at $20?
Thanks

That's it! I think they may have their "list" price mismarked, though. Buy it and install it.

To avoid having to prime after changing the canister filter, fill the new filter with something before installing it. You could put in diesel fuel, diesel additivie, purge, or ATF.

One of the guys at Performance Products suggested using the Diesel Purge product to prime the canister filter after installation...

A while back I almost replaced my primer pump, but the guys at the parts store told me that it still looked ok. I am thinking again that I might want to replace it, because the last time I changed the filters it was gushing out more fuel than in the past. Does anyone know if this new style of primer pump lasts longer than the old style?

123C,

Always listen to guys that sell parts because they know more about repairing cars standing behind a counter than if they were working as competent mechanics or technicians.

i personally dont agree with putting diesel into a new filter before installing. what this is doing is putting unfiltered fuel into your injection pump and injectors. diesel purge is a great idea though. just my 2 cents. thanks hillbilly

Hillbilly,

If you put your finger over the center hole and fill thru the outside holes, the fuel goes thru the filter medium.

I don't bother on my 300SD which has a hand pump, but I do fill the 300SDL filter because it has no hand pump.

Just one thing I might add. I had a hard time fitting a wrench on the old pump and read that a fausset ( as in sink, spelling might be "off") wrench was the thing to use, sure enough, works great
