Door lock fix...(Good to have connections...)
One of the little things on my 190D that needed attention was the broken spike on the end of the driver's door lock cylinder that actually turns the locking mechanism.
Dealer quoted me $474 Can. (for a whole lock. No way you can replace that spike, he says.), wrecker was going to do me a favour and let me have a used one for $250. Looked into buying a used door, etc, but thought it could wait until I was back from my Toronto trip. My sister reminds me my brother-in-law is a machinist working for Daimler-Chrysler in Mississauga who was originally from Stuttgart. Man, if he can't help me, no one can! He took the broken spike to work. It'll be done this afternoon! Man, he loves this kind of stuff. Whoooohooooooo! It's going to cost me a case of beer.

Not sure what the 201 door handle mechanism looks like, but if it is anything like the 126 mechanism the "spike" can be replaced. Might not be able to but one, but should be able to snag one off a junker. The rod on the 126 is held by a single 1/8" roll pin, which can be carefully driven out. One just has to be sure not to lose the spring at the handle end of the rod.

Yes, getting one from a junker was my first inclination, after finding out what the dealer was willing to supply.
But living out in the Vancouver (BC) area means there is only one Mercedes wrecker, and he was not about to let me take the part without buying the whole door lock. Hence the $250 price. One of the problems is that W201 models that are equipped with passive alarm (only 1986, I believe) have a unique door lock, meaning that piece is not the same on any other W201. Or so he said. But, my newly machined part is on its way to me now!!!
