66 220D Starting Problem
No Bill, I did not buy a Fintail, but one of my co-workers did.
Nice enough car. However she tells me that the car will not start cold without pumping the fuel primer. Said it will start once it has been warmed up. I should know what causes this, but I could not think of the answer. Anybody have a thought? |

Yeh, what Txbill said. Also, make sure the glow plugs are working too. Those old things have a series-wired glow plug system, so if you get one bad connection, the whole string goes out. (like a cheap string of christmas lights). Or a corroded connection will cause a voltage drop that won't allow the glow plugs to get as hot as they should. The 220D's I had, I fought that all the time. They would work when ever they darn well felt like it! In warmer weather, I could get the thing to light off, but cold weather was a bugger.

Thanks Bill, I will pass that on. By the way. You said Eduardo was the fastest deisel you had seen. I wonder if that was because of the unique way you developed to lighten him up. Seems that you mentioned once about all the wholes and leaving parts along the way.
A good pal still races on the quarter mile. He was explaining to me that he can gain .05-.10 seconds for every 100 lbs he loses. Maybe that was where Eduardos blistering speed came from? |

I had heard there was a parallel kit you could get. I sold the car before I researched it further. Good to hear they do exist, and they work. If I ever get another one (which I'd like to), I won't even mess with the thing. I'll just convert it right off.

Rick:
She said she just put all new glow plugs in the old diesel. That did get it to start easier, but still will not start without going to the pump first. She said when she gets out there in the morinings it takes several pumps before she can feel any back pressure, then ok. I gave her a print of the thread. I wonder if that pump is ok? Probably is, but I would bet the fuel lines are leaky. |

Bill, I opened the hood on her 66 this morning. Amazing that much space taken up with such a small engine.
There was a little fuel seeping out of the injector lines at the IP. One of the fuel lines was new, the other looked old and was damp with fuel. Very small leaks, but still she will get all of that taken care of right away. See what happens then. Thanks again. |

My old 200 would act up like this and every time it was a leak at an injector conncetion. They seemed to come loose over time and I would get about 1/8 turn on the cap nut and the leak would stop.

TXBill and Rebootit
Coworker came in this morning and said she borrowed some fitting wrenches and did exactly what you guys suggested. Found the flair nuts on the injector lines were a bit loose. Amazingly the car started up right off today. Thank you. |
