E300TD (W210) Whining Noise
Back again. Next problem.
My E300TD (W210) whines. It's coming from the engine, happens in any gear, happens when stationary or moving. It can be heard from within the passenger compartment so I guess it's not normal (or is it). Any ideas anyone? My thoughts are to remove the serpentine belt to eliminate (or not) any of the engine ancilliaries. Of course, I have to work out how to remove the belt first Any advice much appreciated

It sounds like you're on the right track. But I just wanted to mention that a member by the name of Chris Ecklund had a whining noise in his 98 that turned out to be the oil pump. He eventually had it replaced, and I think he found out that the design was updated between 98 and 99. M.B.Doc could probably tell you for sure.

Get a tube
A long time ago when I had a beaut 67 Mustang GT conv an old mechanic showed me how to isolate noises. He used a hose and held it near individual items such as power assist unit, alt, compressor, water pump etc to listen to the noises they made. He could also do the same with the valves in each cyl. He was very good to my car and easy on my walley. Wish I still had that beaut.
Looking to find a similar MB master mechanic here in Dayton, Cinci and Col area but no luck yet.

whining noise from serpentine belt
My 300D '86 had a whining noise from the serpentine belt, which could be heard also inside the car.
A friend had seen a DIY on Swedish television where potato flour was used. Tried it out 15 minutes ago and YES it helps. Less than 4 ml of potato flour on the serpentine belt and the whining noise was gone. |

I would start with the serp belt and belt driven items. Try isolating the sound as much as you can with the car running - be careful!!
Does the pitch of the noise change with engine rpm?

No solution as yet, although I must admit I still haven't had any real opportunity to track this one down yet. I've spent too much time on my real passion, a Lotus Carlton (www.lotus-carlton.co.uk).
To make matters worse, I now have a louder whining noise when turning left or right at speed. It sounds just like something is rubbing against something else (changes with engine speed).

power steering pump?
my 98 e300 had a noisy power steering pump. Very noticeable in tight turns like in a parking deck, etc... Dealer acknowledged that this particular pump on the 98 was overworked but usually OK. If you are still under Starmark warranty and that's the issue, you should be able to get coverage for a replacement.
