Hypothetical climate control question

Is it possible to convert the climate control system on a 300D to the manual system of a 240D? I'm guessing it is.... how hard would it be? I can tell when I'm too hot or cold... I don't mind adjusting stuff like that myself and I'm not real thrilled with how the system on my 300D works. I don't know that I would ever want to do this but with all the problems people are having with their 17+ year old systems I was wondering if this might be an option. Never know when you'll run across a wrecked 240D with all the donor parts there for little $$ either.

I would not do this unless I had a 240D parts car with a properly working manual system sitting next to the one you wish to convert. The worst part of this is that you may end up finding it necessary to remove the dash. 123's, especially the four cylinders are very easy cars to work on EXCEPT when you have to remove the dash. This is a number one nightmare.

What is wrong with your climate control? The late 123 CC systems such as yours are relatively problem free. It was the early servo systems that were really problem laden. There are several common problems. If you give us the symptoms, we might be able to help you through it.

Good luck,

I know that the vents in my dash don't work very well but they work good enough. Lately however it will just blow really hot air or cold air, no in between. I believe the vaccum actuators (sp?) under the dash are the problem with the vents but have no clue about why it will decide to start blowing really hot air.... it used to work fine (other than the vents), at least it did last year. I've replaced the foam tube under the dash about a month ago and the monovalve (only had hot air when driving slow before that) about two weeks ago. Maybe the tube came loose under the dash..... I'll check that again but it didn't even have one there last year..... at least not much of it was there.

The main point of my post was that IF I happened to find a good donor car for a low enough price would it be possible? By Larry's response I know it would be..... just wouldn't be that easy to do.

Greetings,

Just wondering if you have ohmed out your interior as well as exterior temp sensors for correct readings? I would also look to see if the interior sensor bottom air flow tube has come off or is deteriorated. I had a similar problem on my '80 300TD and found that the temp wheel needed calibration and was pretty easy to do yourself to see if it was set right.

The problem you describe is most likely the hose that connects the sensor behind the glove compartment. The hose is foam and disintegrates from age. It is very easily corrected.

Remove the glove box and you will see a pipe going horizontal toward the sensor that is below the small grille at the center of the dash. Use a piece of 3/4" foam pipe insulation from Home Depot. It works great for the application.

If once you remove the glove box, you find the hose to be intact and flowing correctly, post again and we will take you to the next step.

Good luck,
