Clutch problems

dweller,

Maybe the problem isn't the hydraulic system at all. I can't get at my spare set of pedals because I'm having an open house but there's a little spring device on the pedal assembly that can adjust the pedal tension. If it's too slack the detent falls out of position and the pedal drops to the floor.

Check this out. When everyone leaves, I'll find the pedal assembly and have a better idea but I remember it happening to me and I put more spring tension on it and never had the problem again.

Yours may have been compromised when you put the new master cylinder in.

finale

I reported a couple of weeks ago problems with my clutch (82 240D). This followed replacing the brake master cylinder, and I thought I'd gotten air into the clutch system. I replaced all the fluids, back-bled the clutch, and I still had the problem--intermittent failure of the clutch pedal to return after being pushed to the floor. Advice of this group was to replace the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder.

Since the car was usable (I just had to get my toe under the pedal and pull it up when it didn't return), I put it off (besides which, I wasn't looking forward to working on the car when it was 20F out).

Well, this morning, 200 miles from home, it failed altogether. Had to get towed in to a shop I didn't know from adam. They replaced the clutch master cylinder and unloaded major portions of my wallet. Price for replacement cylinder (FTE brand) was $168 (just about 2X Fastlane's price), plus 2.5 hours of labor @$75/hour, plus nickle-and-dime for brake fluid, "shop materials" etc. I had the feeling they knew they'd never see me again. At least the mechanic was decent about it--an old guy. He showed me the failed master cylinder and suggested it probably failed when I got a little air in it and probably some gunge from changing out the brake master cylinder. The seals were nicked.

I suppose the moral is don't put off projects.

Sure would be nice to have a heated garage, especially here in Michigan.

At least it's all working fine now.

older and hopefully a little wiser,
