84 300DT Vacuum pump DIY

I'm planning to change the vacuum pump gasket on my 266k '84 300DT tomorrow. I did the basic search but did not find a step-by-step (THIS IS MY FIRST MAJOR DIY)
procedure. Can someone give me the procedures on how to change the gasket. And by the way, do I have to drain the oil before I do this? Thanks .

You will need to remove the p/steering belt, disconnect the vacuum connection for the brake booster, & then remove the allen bolts that hold the pump to the engine block.
NO need to drain oil.

Doc doesn't usually make return visits to a thread, so I'll jump in here. Maybe he'll prove me wrong.

Belts are generally removed by finding the accessory on that built that is mounted so that it can pivot. Usually one of the mounting bolts goes through an elongated and curved hole in order to provide adjustment of the belt tension. Loosen the bolts on that accessory (I'm assuming the power steering pump in this case) just enough that you can pivot it. Then move it enough so that the belt is loose enough to remove.

I don't want to discourage you from doing things yourself, but if you're asking how to remove belts then I strongly suggest that you get a manual. A Haynes manual that you can find the auto parts store goes through everything step by step and will be enough to get you started. Later on you should get the Mercedes CD from this site.

ast - you can come back with any questions you have. Changing the vacuum pump is pretty straight forward. Just use caution on those allen head fasteners that hold the vp to the block. Make SURE that you clean them out good and the allen wrench is fully seated in the hole prior to trying to turn them. You will create alot of work if you strip the head out. Also, don't overdo it when you tighten them back down.
