Problem during my trip.

1978 300SD, W116

heres what happened to me on my trip. i was hoping to get some answers.

i was driving about 100 miles away from home. i noticed some weird smells. increase is temperature, and lost of oil pressure. so i pulled over to check it out. it looked like the dip stick popped out and oil gushed all over the engine. i checked the dip stick and i had no oil left (or not enough that i could have checked). so i added 1 quart of oil and drove (slowly) 3 miles to the next exit. where i filled her up with some rotella T. until it was full. i noticed a slight sound when i step on the gas. but so continue driving. after a while the sound became louder and louder. untili decided to stop and leave the car there. the car sounds semi-okay when idling, but as soon as i give it gas. it has a clunking noise to it. now that u have heard my problem. i need some help with the following:

a) what could possibly have been damaged?
b)approximately how much would it cost to get it fixed?
c)is it safe to drive it the 100 miles back home?

this is a big lost to me. and even though i will continue to use diesel mercedes. non could replace this car .

thxs for any info u can give me.

Could it be your hose on the top of the valve cover which goes to the air cleaner, could that be plugged up and preventing crankcase ventilation? Resulting in the dipstick popping up>?

You could try pulling that hose off and see if the noise goes away...

Sorry I can't solve the problem from here, but you sound faily desperate so I just threw something out there...

Hopefully, Larry Bible can respond. We all respect his wisdom (except about timing chain stretch... ) and maybe he has heard this sound/problem.

Ned2683,

ANswer to a:My diagnosis is that you sprung an oil leak, possibly in one of the oil cooler hoses. The noise you hear sounds like a rod bearing knocking from lack of lubrication.

Sorry I don't have any good news. You will probably need an engine overhaul, rebuilt short block or used engine. The first thing to do would be to remove the oil pan and check the rod bearings and crankshaft. If the crankshaft isn't damaged, you might be able to replace the bearings but the rings may be damaged too by the lack of lubrication. Answer to b is: One way or another it will cost thousands to repair unless you do it your self.

One way to figure if it is worth to repair is: If a person came along and offered you the car with a rebuilt engine for the cost of the repairs, would you buy the car for that much? If you would, get it repaired. If not keep it for a parts car and buy another one on Ebay.

We were discussing in this BB why MB doesn't put in a visual or audible alarm for low oil pressure along with the oil pressure gage. Something that would notify you immediately of low or no oil pressure so you could shut off the engine before it was destroyed.

Answer to c is NO. You probably would ruin the crankshaft and or break a rod and the engine would sieze or crack the block. Get it towed home and the engine may be rebuildable. If the engine is destroyed it won't be usable for a core on a rebuilt engine.

Sorry about your problem but I have to agree with P E H. It sounds like a lower end knock that is going to take some work to get fixed. The fact the noise is increasing suggests that the damage is done and will only get much worse if you drive it. The more I read stories like this the more I realize that oil hoses are wear items and should be replaced periodically even if they look OK. Cheap insurance.

Thank you for the replies. i kinda knew the engine was ruined. but had to make sure. this car has served its time. and our family has got our money worth out of it. $900 for 6 years of reliable transportation is pretty good. the engine was the only thing holding up. the body and other acessories gave up on me. so i guess i have to junk it, and look for another W126 around here.

if anybody in the missouri area would like this car for parts. please contact me.

thanks again for all the replies. i still have strong faith in these diesels.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Almost sounded like the CCV line plugged up, with the rings being worn the compression makes it's way around and can send oil out through the dip stick.

Actually there is now something on ebay which for something like $180 they "give" you a kit for idiot lights on low oil pressure or others. Maybe if it were off of the OE sender I would consider it, but tapping for a new sending unit... no thanks.
