valve adjusting

Hi, I am trying to adjust my valves. Each cylinder has 2 valves: all together 10 valves. When i checked the valves, all of them were closed except one. What should I do? Should I turn the crankshaft and open all the valves or does one have to be opened and one closed? Do i use a 27 mm guage to open valve?
Thank You in advance.

1980 300D 5 cylinder

I heartily agree.. and even a search may not give instructions which get THAT basic... I suggest that first you go get a good small engine book that is used for school classes... one which is very good is 'small gas engines'; by Alfred c. Roth... then really study it to learn four cycle theory... because that is what is controlling those valves...
You could really do some damage before you even knew to be careful starting out on a close tolerance machine like a MB diesel....
At the VERY LEAST.. have someone do it first with you watching ... you could make your car into junk pretty easy if you don't know what you are doing...
AND get the manual for your car engine.. these are often strange critters... even to old mechanics...
