What is the 'box of springs' under the hood of my 123 for?
On the passenger side under the hood there is a perforated metal box containing a mysterious myriad of springs. What's it for?

Believe those are a hold-over from trolley days. Ie resistors for changing the speed on the heater motor, just like regulating speed on trolley motors.

Yep, that's it.
On another note the 84 Ford Diesel I used to have had that "box of springs" (it wasn't in a box) on the right side just under the vents in front of the windshield (which allowed in leaves etc). Really good design which allowed for some good fires that were hard to put out. Yes, those things can get pretty hot.
