shift knob vibration

Greetings,

Please help with the diagnosis. On a '83 300 cd, 213500 miles.
There is a lot of vibration on the shifter knob at low RPM. As the transmission is shifting through the gears, more vibration is felt at lower RPM's, and less vibration at higher RPM's. I had the car out for highway testing, and at 70 mph it is the worst and at 80 mph range and above there was no vibration at all. I have replaced the motor mounts, transmission mount, both rear axles. Could this be internal transmisson trouble or driveline problems? Thanks for your help.

Ck the small plastic bushings on the shifter and trans where the shifter linkage rod fits into. If they are bad the easiest way to fix the shifter bushing is to remove the shifter assy itself and repair it on the bench. Does the shifter feel sloppy when shifting? If so the bushings are probably your problem.

Motorhead,

I have not checked the shifter bushings, however there is no slope are slack when shifting thru the range of gears. I'll give the bushings a look. Tks.....

It would be my guess that you are experiencing the center bearing failing. (that is, IF you have a center bearing).

These aren't too bad to replace. You have to remove the shaft to the rear at least probably, then unbolt the bearing, etc. If it has a rubber mount, change it too!!!
