Heh yeah....deconstructing that, I got 33mpg on the freeway and that tank was filled meticulously to the neck each time taking 10 minutes to let the foam settle down.

Hmm....I see the other poster's post has been withdrawn......

This is the link he posted. Apparently he is little more than a towing/salvage company.

1981 Mercedes-Benz 240D, 4 cylinder 2.4L diesel engine, automatic transmission, 146K original miles. This car is an extremely well maintained southern car and one of the most reliable vehicles. It runs awesome, no any kind of issue. Super on fuel, 42 MPG. We only fill it up once a month. The exterior is in very good condition. Metallic grey paint, still good, maybe faded here and there, but since the color is light, not noticable. No dent. All chrome trims are in good conditions. All lights are working properly. Solid inside out. Interior is blue leather, no rip, no tear. Power windows, power seats, power steering, power sun-roof...everything works! Ice cold AC. Radio & CD player. There is only small piece of wood grain missing on the very left cover of the dash and some wear around ignition switch from key scratches. Clean trunck, still has original spare with new tire and first aid kit. Definitely a great classic car with a forever running engine. Dialy driver. $2495.00 OBO. Please call xxx-xxx-xxxx for inquiries.
An automatic 240D, getting 42mpg....yeah right! 32mpg would be pushing reality.

It was spam... first time poster bumping six year old thread with outrageous MPG claims in an attempt to direct web traffic to his site with a link at the end of his post.

I never got close to 30 mpg with my 240D.

I got 30 mpg once with my 300D, a 1975 non-turbo version.

With the 240D, it may be possible if you never went any faster than 55 mph and never floored it.

My best with my 240 has been 28.6 mpg on a tank of mostly highway. I got a little over 29 once on a road trip in my 300.

Mercedes 240d standards seem to settle into two pretty distinct camps. About 24 mpg and about thirty mpg. I feel that if one is at the lower end a little investigation might up the milage somewhat and perhaps power as well. I still feel you want everthing that engine can deliver.

I have no experience with the automatic versions other than thinking they are slower and usually deliver less milage to some degree.

I have to say 42 mpg is not going to happen. I really want to get a tank at 40mpg, but that is not going to happen even in my 240D with lots of mods. In stock form I was always getting a low 28mpg in winter to 32 in summer. After the turbo install and other mods, I was able to get 31-32 in the winter and right now 35-36 in the summer. This is a really special case, I don't go over 70 on my 130mile daily commute and a 1/6th of the driving is on back roads going 40 - 50mph.

I have had 2 other 240D's over the years, the first was a 79 with 300k+ got about 28mpg on a good day. The other was an 81 that got ~30mpg, but never up in the 40's.

I have never gotten 40 mpg with either of my 5 spd 240Ds under the best conditions. Anyone claiming 40mpg with a 240D 4 spd is dreaming.

Around here 33 mpg is not uncommon with a 4 spd manual, allot of two lane 50-55 mph driving.

My stickshift '81 240D managed about 30mpg on my Outer Banks trip last year, while my automatic '8 240D maxes out around 25 on the highway. Suspect my automatic version suffers fom some inherent slippage in a tranny with no lock-up converter, and it's also a bit tired from many years of being flogged by the PO's teenagers until I rescued it.
The stickshift car is defintly the nicer highway vehicle, while the automatic is perfect for local errands.
Once warmed up I have no real gripes with my automatic's performance, though city mileage only averages around 20.
OTOH most of my older gasser Benzes ranged between 11 and ,at best, 23 mpg.

I think the biggest factor has to be how you drive a 240D, aside from the mechanical condition and proper adjustments of the IP, transmission, and tire alignment, etc.

My problem is just trying to go fast enough to get the idiot behind me off my bumper. Since the 240D is gutless you will need to floor it a lot more than a 300D turbo, and mileage will suffer.

With the higher horsepower OM617's it is easier to just cruise along feathering the throttle and overall mileage should be better, but probably not in stop-and-go traffic. I really can't wait to transplant a 617 into my 240D, im sick of the 616.

With a factory 5-speed, my '84 Euro NA 300TD gets about the same fuel mileage as my stick 240D, but with much better acceleration and more relaxed highway cruising.

It also seems that 240D can come with either 4 or 5 cylinders. Why the model name does not have some extra letter to differentiate between 4 and 5 cylinder ones?

In your treasured opinions, what parts should be recommended to be replaced in a 1981 Mercedes 240D (4 cylinders and manual transmission) when it reaches about 230K miles?

Thank you very much for all your precious help.

Best regards,

You should expect up to but not over 30 mpg. That's the most we ever got out of ours in the '70s, '80s and '90s, when we had 240Ds.

What condition is your 616 in? I'm looking at one soon, don't know if it's good yet.

Anyways, I love the 616. It had a half tank when I bought it in '06, I'm going to top it off when the fuel light goes on, supposed to be 1/4 tank or so.

My 81 240D stick has given 29 mpg city or highway since new. Can't tell much difference between city or highway. I use Redline diesel additive.

Almost no repairs have been needed in 140K miles- the only things replaced were the glow plug relay, water pump and timing chain. The chain bumped up performance at least 2%
